A high priority for the Titans this week in Minnesota is getting of to a quick, competitive start on both sides of the ball.

That would be a significant change from the first four weeks of the season, as the Titans have been outscored 41-13 in first quarters.

Offensively, the Titans have yet to score a touchdown in the first quarter. The team’s only trip to the end zone in that quarter came via Tommie Campbell’s punt return against Detroit.

“It’s about execution,” Titans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer said. “There are times we look good and times we don’t. But I think we’re getting closer. I think we’re improving each week. The run game improved last week, the red zone improved last week. We just have to continue to work on that.”

The last thing the Titans’ offense wants to is go up against both a strong Minnesota defense and a stirred-up crowd at Mall of America Field

“Obviously when you play a team like Minnesota indoors, the volume of the crowd is unbelievable,” Palmer said. “And if you can take the crowd out early, that will definitely help you.”

Things have been just as bad defensively in the early going, as the Titans have given up points on the first or second drive of all four of their opponents. In both of the Titans’ two road games, they’ve trailed 14-0 after the first quarter.

“That’s one of the biggest things of playing with a lot of young guys, and not understanding how important it is from the first snap to the last snap,” Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said. “We’ve been playing against a lot of good offenses in this league. But it’s not going to change. People are still wanting to get points in the first quarter and the second quarter.

“And if you get behind, the (Titans’) offense has to throw the football. You can’t run C.J.. There’s a lot of things you can’t do if you’re giving up points.”

Gray said his defenders must be at the top of their game right away, as opposed to raising their level after allowing a score or two.

“You try to get them to understand every snap is important and every play can beat you,” Gray said. “You just don’t know which one it’s going to be.

“I’ve kind of watched how we played. From the middle of the second to the third quarter, we turn the intensity back up and that’s too late then. You’re playing from behind then and that’s what you don’t need to do.”

Why does the intensity seem to come and go?

“I don’t know,” Gray said. “If I knew that, I wouldn’t be answering that question right now.”

If we're to beat these guys, gotta be active outside the tackles on offense, Viks have a good front 7 that I doubt our O-Line can handle. If I'm Palmer I try and hide my deficiencies by doing this. Or we could just pass a lot like week-3.
