The decision by the Titans to shuffle their safeties remains a head-scratcher, especially after poor defensive play in the first two games. Yet the player impacted most — veteran safety Jordan Babineaux — hasn’t made a stink about it. This despite the fact he was bumped from the starting lineup and into a limited role.

“I do have my take on the whole deal, but I don’t make personnel decisions and I don’t decide who plays,” Babineaux said. “Coaches have an understanding of what guys work better together. So you have to trust the people making the decisions or you can have a bad attitude and you wind up being a cancer, I guess. I don’t want to do that.”

Babineaux was the strong safety last season, when he led the Titans in tackles. In an effort to get inexperienced but talented Robert Johnson into the lineup this season, however, the Titans moved two-time Pro Bowl pick Michael Griffin from free safety to strong safety, and inserted Johnson at free safety.

Johnson played 141 of the team’s 148 snaps in the first two games, while Babineaux played 31. The Titans lost their first two games by a combined score of 72-23. Accepting a reduced role wasn’t exactly what Babineaux envisioned after signing a two-year, $3.2 million contract this offseason.

The decision obviously wasn’t based on financials — Babineaux is making $1.6 million this year, Johnson $540,000. As far as credentials, coming into the season Babineaux had played in 115 games with 43 starts. Johnson had played in three games, all on special teams.

Defensive coordinator Jerry Gray has a perfectly good explanation: Johnson earned the job by beating out Babineaux during the preseason.

Asked what Babineaux needed to do to earn more playing time, Gray said: “Keep working. We were competing in the offseason and also in training camp and Babineaux was a starter. Things happen and you have to compete, you have to keep competing. He is doing a good job of working back in and hopefully he’ll get a chance to play a lot more.”

Babineaux, a ninth-year pro, has already seen this movie. He started 16 games for the Seahawks in 2009 but was reduced to a special teams role in 2010.

“I have been in this situation before where I went from 60-plus snaps to 20 or 30. So I have dealt with it,” he said. “Everybody wants to play, but everybody can’t play.”

Babineaux said the demotion wouldn’t impact his morale and that his confidence hadn’t wavered.

“I know that I am a starter in this league. It goes back to attitude, and you kind of hurt yourself by having a bad attitude so I won’t do that,” he said. “This game is a revolving door. And the opportunity is going be there. … My job is to be ready when the time comes.”

If I'm Babineaux, I wouldn't be staying positive. I'd be open to the coaches how I deserve to be starting every game because I've shown to be far superior in coverage and tackling. Gotta stick up for yourself, Babs! Don't let these scrub safeties keep getting more play time than you!

Griffin is Polamalu though. They're making the same money. They're the same!

    Never gets old.

I'm the one who keeps saying it. Haha

I'm just being extremely sarcastic and expressing my hate for Griffin by comparing him to Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu because he's under a very similar contract as those two. Completely absurd.
