Osi is obviously an upgrade to Ball but I'm not sure he is going to be worth the price. I'd rather have Mario as well.

If we look FA on the OL it should be at C. We can find quality OGs in the draft and upgrading C probably improves the OL more than an OG right now. However, we could actually draft Konz and still sign a vet C and have Konz play RG for a few years. Either way there are a number of guys we could draft to play RG but after Konz I'm not as excited about the Cs available.

That's not true. If we were to give him a $30M signing bonus, that money is counted towards every season he agreed to. For example, if we gave him a 6 yr $70M deal, that signing bonus gets spread out over 6 years, so we would be paying for him even if he were to get cut 2-3 years from now.

We are still paying for signing Jovan Haye BTW and he's been gone a year.

What the heck makes you think Williams would agree to a deal with guaranteed money only in year one? Of course he won't do that.

He's going to get like $40+ million guaranteed over the course of the deal. No matter how bad he is in year one (or two), he won't be cuttable.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was the signing bonuses that generally made teams "keep" the players for the first few years because they've essentially already paid them. The guaranteed money is only paid if they're on the team. In which case you're probably right, we'll probably have to keep him for 2 years.

Somebody else will pick up his deal if you cut/trade him, unless he's a complete and total bust like Haynesworth. If we need our cap space back I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get it.

Guaranteed money is guaranteed. That's why it's called guaranteed. You get paid that money (and it counts towards the cap) whether you are on the team or not.

There are some subtle ways a team can work around this in the language of a contract (like guaranteeing money for skill vs. injury), but in the case of a free agent with a lot of bargaining power like Mario Williams, the contract will include a ton of money that he will get paid no matter how badly he plays.

If the Titans sign Williams, they will be committing to him for the long-term. The Titans will get a contract that makes it very hard to cut him after just one (and probably even two or three) years.

My apologies, I was misinformed on how guaranteed money worked.

No need to apologize. NFL contract stuff is confusing as hell.

That's the thing. Guaranteed money is a broad term for signing bonuses and roster bonuses. If we were talking about roster bonuses, then you would be right about this. Signing bonuses, however, are prorated over the length of the contract (against the cap, the player already has the money), unless the player is released early, in which case his signing bonus may be accelerated against the cap the following season. If he's cut after June FA, then it is split up over the following two seasons. The aforementioned Jovan Haye for example, is costing us $1 million against the cap going into next season.

Roster bonuses, like the one Peyton Manning is supposed to get next month, are also considered guaranteed. If a player is cut before the bonus is paid, then it doesn't count against the cap. Really only considered guaranteed because it's paid at the beginning of the league year and it can't be recouped if the player is cut. It's not really guaranteed, but those agents sure like to say it.
