My son and I have been playing a game called Runescape for the last several months. The thing I like about it is that I can play with him while I'm at home and he is at his Mom's apartment.

I gotta tell you, that game is boring the ever livin' shoop out of me. It's extremely repetitive and now that we have both got up to around level 50 with our characters it takes forever to level up or achieve anything. In short, we're ready to move on.

The Boy prefers military games to fantasy/sci fi, but his Mother won't let him play anything rated T or above. He's testing something called Eden Eternal right now, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

Another point is that we have Wii systems at my house and at his Mom's and both are connected to wireless networks.

    A few questions...

    1. Is World of Warcraft suitable for a 10 year old? He's an advanced gamer for his age, but I worry that his Mother will pitch a fit.
    2. Are there any MMORPG military style games that would be suitable?
    3. Does the Wii have the ability for us to play games together over the 'net? If so, is there anything out there anyone could suggest for us to play together?

I'm currently paying a little over $10/month for the Runescape accounts, so I don't mind paying a subscription.

Thanks to anyone for suggestions! We really enjoy playing together and since my divorce it has been a fun way to spend a little time patching the gap.

Also, he got a PS3 for Christmas and I might possibly break down and buy one myself, but it would take a me a little while to fit that into my budget.

The game wow itself is fine for a 10 year old. The issue you are going to quickly run into, is that 90% of the people who play the game are complete and total dicks. If your kid never groups up with other players, and turns chat off- he will have a fun time, and you will be able to relax a bit about what goes on around him.

I played wow for 4 years on and off, and I can honestly say it has the worst community of any game I have ever played by *far* and I've seen quite a few players who said they were children cussed out.

At the moment, there are really no shooter/military type mmo unless Planetside is still up and running, but I do not think it is. They are however making Planetside 2, and that sounds exactly like what you are looking for.

As for the Wii, no idea. I do believe they have some type of online play, but definitely nothing remotely in the area of a type of persistent online world.

edit: If you have the $ to purchase a new game, I would HIGHLY advise this game that just released on Dec 20th. http://www.swtor.com/ The community so far is very good, helpful people, and minimal trolling/rudeness. The game is also set up so you have a companion (pet) that helps you out, so you can solo a ton of content. All that.. AND LIGHT SABERS !

Thanks for the advice! I'll check out the Star Wars title today and might set up a WoW account and put it through its paces before signing up the boy.
I'll check back in and let you know how it goes.

Wow is now free for the first couple of levels.... you might want to get on a pve server instead of pvp...

But I seriously want to play star wars... sigh.... if only school and money didn't get in the way..

money I can understand but come on your letting school get in the way of wasting hours upon hours of online gaming. Your dude card is in jeopardy

good choice though. Those games will always be there and your future boss might actually expect you to know something about ROI or logistics. Then again he might need to know how too defeat the evil bat eyes of WoW so whos to say - lol

I'll also throw out a recommendation for the Star Wars mmo. Coolest thing is the dragon-age type chatting, really makes the game.

I would recommend Trooper class as it's a shooting type class and the storyline (at least the first 10 levels) are more militaristic by nature.

You can buy a desktop that will run swtor cheaper than a laptop that will. I don't know if that helps you with your question, though.

I was in the beta for TOR but my laptop (which is a year old Vaio) couldn't run it. The graphics went screwy, totally sucked.
