What Jake Locker brings to the table. He brings a toughness to the quarterback position, a leader something we been lacking since McNair. He is a high character guy with a huge amount of tangibles. Only concern is his accuracy. So let me show you something...

PassingGlossary ▪ CSV ▪ PRE ▪ Statistics complete back to 2000
    Passing
Year School Conf Class Pos Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rate
    1991 Alcorn State QB 189 337 56.1 2895 8.6 8.0 24 15 142.8
    1992 Alcorn State QB 231 427 54.1 3541 8.3 8.5 29 11 141.0
    1993 Alcorn State QB 203 386 52.6 3197 8.3 7.7 22 15 133.2
    1994 Alcorn State QB 304 530 57.4 4863 9.2 9.4 44 17 155.4
    Career Alcorn State 927 1680 55.2 14496 8.6 8.5 119 58 144.1

That was Steve McNair college stats. He did have impressive yardage and touchdowns. He also had high interceptions and a dismal completion percentage in college. Did it translate?

    TOTAL 161 4,544 2,733 60.1 28.2 31,304 6.9 194.4 174 119

He improved in college from an 55.2 completion percent to a 60% he fell under 60% percent 4 times one including his rookie year then the other 3 in his first few years.

Locker like Steve McNair. Is going to bring a warrior to the football position. The ability to keep plays alive with his feet. The toughness to keep him in games. And be what Vince couldnt a LEADER and High Character guy for this team years to come.

For all of you who hate on Locker because of some accuracy troubles in college.

Locker and McNair share a few common characteristics but that's about where the similarities end. Just because McNair's completion percentage went up doesn't mean Locker's will (though we all hope it will).

McNair was handcuffed most of his early years in playing a conservative passing game because, IMO, he wasn't consistently accurate on anything mid-range and beyond. Like Young, it meant that the completion percentage went up but it didn't necessarily reflect the accuracy of the QB.

One guy who Locker does get compared to a lot is Favre. And his completion percentages in college were:

    40.7
    55.8
    54.1
    54.5

He ended up with a 61.9 completion percentage for his NFL career. While it still doesn't automatically mean Locker will improve his accuracy, I'm very optimistic that he will. Locker seems like a guy that won't take no for an answer. And a good sign is that at least he was able to hit the 58% mark for one of his seasons.

Im not saying Locker will be the next McNair.

Im looking at the upside to his accuarcy issues. By giving good examples such as McNair and Farve horrible accuarcy in college.

What i am saying, was when watching McNair as a kid he brought leadership and a toughness to the Qb spot.

That is what I see in Locker he will be a great leader and have the mental toughness and physical to excel in this league

Favre+McNair=A football god! I'd be thrilled if these comparisons turn out to be accurate.

I certainly see where you're coming from when you compare them as prospects coming out of college based on their playing styles and physical similarities.

They're both 6'2-230, Locker is faster and imo has a stronger arm and more textbook throwing motion.

Another attribute I think they share is that both played through injuries and were well respected leaders on their teams.

Both are playmaking QBs that use their legs to convert 3rd downs and make yards but they can also use their legs to escape pressure/sacks and makes plays in the passing game with their arms.

I've actually made that comparison myself:
Form a statistical standpoint though Steve's college production at Alcorn State was far superior to Locker's at Washington.

BTW-I don't think completion % is indicative of accuracy.
Comp % is a measure of a teams passing offense as unit, the OL, receivers and the QB.

I think Locker's ball placement and ball location are on par with any of the other top prospects, I would actually put his ball placement ahead of Newton and Gabbert.

The similarity between Favre, McNair, and Locker?

They played on scrub teams in college.

So that is naturally why the completion % went up for those two.
