Do you honestly believe that teams will judge Newton based on Gruden's television interview and not their own interviews? Yikes.

Actually Locker has decent mechanics. Has a strong, over-the-top release that helps him from getting too many of his passes batted down. Footwork in the pocket is adequate, but can get happy-feet when the pocket starts to collapse. He does a good job of setting his feet when throwing the ball and usually steps into his throws even when getting hit, although does occasionally throw off back foot after taking numerous hits. His play-action fakes are usually very well played-out and can often bait linebackers into playing the run. Locker’s release is quick and does a good job of getting it out of his hands once he finds his target. With subpar pass blocking, he had to learn to get the ball out of his hands quickly at UW. Locker had below average talent around him, and still put up decent numbers.

Teams already knew Newton was that stupid. It will take Newton years just to figure out an NFL playbook. Newton has all the physical tools to make an elite QB, but he doesn't have what it takes mentally. He has potential, but I don't see him evee panning out.

I could live with Locker, but he's a HUGE reach at #8. We can't let our need make us stupid with that pick (again). We need to get a sure fire pick based on talent (BPA).

I say attempt to trade back 5-10 spots and pick him up there. Redskins or Dolphins might take him but if they do, I just don't see it as big of a loss. If the Redskins trade with us, then we could get Locker- if they get him then we could get Julio Jones (who IMO would help this team more than Locker or Fairley at #8 both with his skills and his locker room presence). A serviceable QB vet with Julio, Britt, Cook and CJ would make our offense incredibly potent.

PLEASE don't take Locker at #8. I'm lukewarm on Fairley at #8- I believe he was a one year wonder because he knew he was going to the NFL. I don't think he is intrinsically motivated.

Why does everyone think Locker is such a reach at #8? If you believe a guy can be a franchise quarterback, he's not a reach at any spot.

That's just idiotic. He can learn and master Gus Malzahn's playbook his first year there but working as a full time player with no classes to attend he can never learn an nfl playbook? How idiotic.

What about the rest of the Gruden interview? Anybody see that? In the rest of the interview he showed a total mastery of the playbook and how plays work and why. He was asked to explain and diagram a TD pass and he did a perfect job. On the field he makes the right read and executes the play perfectly.

Duh? Because he is not good enough for us to use that spot on him. We are going to not draft a defensive linemen so we can reach for that guy?

In the Gruden interview with Locker he showed a play against Syracuse in which there were 3 guys lined up wide left on an obvious blitz. Locker makes no attempt to adjust anything, change the play. All 3 guys came clean and Locker could have been picked as he threw the ball in desperation.

Gruden then showed another play where a guy was running wide open in a seam route and the ball didn't get anywhere near him.

Because that is like paying $40,000 for a car you can get for $20,000. You may need some wheels, but overpaying simply to get a car is crazy. Value (in regards to talent is key to having a draft that translates into success on the field.

Value too often is over-inflated because of a perceived need. They call it "car fever" in in the automobile industry. IMO Locker wouldn't make that significant of a difference versus a serviceable QB vet. Taking BPA WOULD make that type of difference.
