I tend to agree. So much so that I'd like for us to focus on trading for a vet QB(to keep 2-3 yrs) and avoid "settling" for anyone but Gabbert in this years draft. I'd like for our draft to focus on building a team for a QB from a subsequent years draft class (Luck etc).

I think if we trade down to 10-20 spot first and pick up a second we can get some quality NFL ready players (eg-Julio Jones, aldon smith, JJ watt, Mark Ingram) and depth to build on for the upcoming years. We have an almost entirely new coaching staff. Odds are we just won't win many games next year. Let's focus on the re-build and draft for talent, not need so we can be contenders in 2013-14.

Kiper is such a clown, because he had said we will be bad, now we will be the opposite. Look for us to got 10-6 or something now just to make Kiper look like more of an idiot as usual. He has no clue.

I would love to grab Andrew Luck, but I just don't see it happening. Granted we could be bad but there are teams that will be worse. Plus who's to know if Luck doesn't 'pull a Locker' and be terrible in the scouts eyes next season? It's not set in the stone that he will be number one. So it's plausible that we could get him without picking at one. But I see us grabbing a rookie and vet this year and just progressing on from there...

    I guess it's a good thing I value Kiper's opinion as much as I do jesse's.

Cleveland is by far worse than us, as are the Bills, Redskins, 49er's, Panthers, Cardinals, and maybe even Bengals.

I think we'll be pretty bad, but I can't see us being the league's worst. We have a lot of catching up to do because of the new coaching staff combined with the lockout. Yet I still think we are much closer to being real contenders, at least personnel wise, than many other teams. If we get a decent QB I think we'll be alright on offense. Defense obviously needs help but I believe the defensive problems from last year were more scheme-related than player-related. Hopefully those issues are taken care of.

Who knows though... maybe we will be the worst. I agree Kiper is a clown regardless.

I do agree with this strategy though. If the FO isn't in love with any of the QBs enough to confidently take them at 8 then why reach? Grab a defensive playmaker in the first, add offensive weapons/depth later, sign/trade for a vet QB as a stopgap, worry about your QB of the future next year.

Kiper knows that we have a scrub coaching staff. Nothing to see here.

I agree Kiper is just a talking head, but we need to be real about what we are up against. It is no easy task to transition into a new coaching staff albeit a HC who is familiar with the organization. And despite retaining some of our old schemes, we ARE facing a new OC, DC and key position coaches with either a 2nd year QB, a rookie, or a vet trade new to our organization. All that spells little more than a run game and screen passes. And let's not forget about the effects of a lockout on a team in transition.

That is A LOT stacked up against us. We should be real about our expectations. I would much rather see us NOT REACH for a need and definitely grab the best talent on the board. In other words, understand that building for long term success is more important than for immediate marginal success.

Just remember, Luck and Stanford lost a lot of big supporting players (and a coach) this offseason. He could be a Locker. I wouldn't go to the bank with him as #1 yet.

I'd just as soon grab a QB this year and get started with the rebuild rather than wait.
