They don't HAVE to take a QB.

Afterall- Cam Newton wont start immediately- and if he does, he'll suck. Same for Gabbert.

Might as well wait for Luck next year in that case.

Cam Newton is the best prospect in this whole draft and the QB with the biggest star potential. The potential impact he could have is simply much greater than any other position.

What else would Carolina do? Take Bowers and live with Clausen at QB? Clausen showed no indication last year that he can be that guy.

A DE who gives you 10 sacks a season isn't half the value of a top 10 QB.

So who does Carolina start then genius? Clausen who had 3 Tds and 9 ints last year? Newton can outplay Clausen with a blind fold on.

Why Cam Newton isn't a first round pick, by K.C. Joyner.

This is an Insider article so I can't post the whole thing, but I'll do my best to give you an idea.

"As valuable as size, speed and strength are, they do have limitations when evaluating players. Pro football history is full of imposing physical specimens who didn't pan out because they had some weaknesses that more than offset their elite physical attributes (e.g. Brian Bosworth, Mike Mamula, Lawrence Phillips).

Despite the clear historical warnings, in just about every draft there are teams that will select a player based on his physical attributes, ignoring his glaring football deficiencies.

The 2010 Denver Broncos offered a good example of this when they drafted last year's somewhat flawed quarterbacking phenom, Tim Tebow. The recent comments of John Elway, one of the Broncos' new head honchos and a man who knows a thing or two about quarterbacking, that Tebow is still "very raw," even after a year in the system, say their organization is probably going through a serious case of buyer's remorse.

This is something that teams should keep in mind when considering drafting former Auburn Tigers quarterback Cam Newton in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft. His physical characteristics are off the charts (6-foot-5, 248 pounds, 4.59 40-yard dash time), but a tape review of his 2010 season shows several significant weaknesses that make him more than a bit of a first-round risk.

There are a wide variety of areas that should concern NFL teams and were apparent when I went back and reviewed tape on Newton, but the three most significant are:
    1. Footwork
    2. Lack of urgency in his backpedal
    3. Not stepping into passes to avoid contact

These three areas combined for dozens of Newton's mistakes during the season, and this is far from a comprehensive list. When errors of this nature are added to Newton's off-field issues and his inconsistent combine performance, from a physical and mental perspective, it emphasizes just how much of a risk he is.

The odds are quite good that some team will be saying the same thing about Newton a year from now that the Broncos are saying about Tebow today. Whether or not those comments come with a Tebow-like case of buyer's remorse will depend on if that team was foolish enough to invest a first-round pick on Newton's potential."

Hey, a team can take a big strong guy in the top ten and try to teach him how to play quarterback, or they can take someone who actually knows how to play his respective position.

Chad Reuter, senior analyst for NFLDraftScout.com, said he'd steer clear of Newton and Mallett. He's not sure a great pro day by either player could change his mind.

"If I'm the Titans, unless Gabbert fell into my lap I'd be looking at trying to get a Locker or Ponder in the second round,'' Reuter said. "Just having come off Vince Young — and Cam Newton isn't the same as V.Y. because he's probably more mentally tough — but coming off of V.Y., I would have a hard time seeing them picking Newton.

"And do you want to start a new era of Titan football with Mallett and all the questions about him. If I am the Titans I wouldn't even look at either one of them and focus on Gabbert."

I have to agree with the author of the article, the gap between the tier 1 and 2 QB's just isn't great enough to absolutely garuntee a QB at #8. The tier 2 QB's (Ponder, Locker) to me look just as good as Mallett and Newton and they only reason they don't have the hype that the former two have is because they didn't win as many games and their not from power confrences.

If Gabbert isn't there at #8, get a new defensive player.

The problem is, there is a very good chance both Locker and Ponder go in the top 24 picks. Waiting until round 2 may not be an option.

Oh definetly, I concur. I am actually just basing this off a lot of the mocks I have seen, most of them have Ponder and Locker in the 2nd. Yet, I can see teams that don't really have a need for a Qb grabbing them in the first on a BPA basis.

Pro Football talk did a mock yesterday where they had Locker going to Washington at 10 and Ponder going to the Jags at 16. There have been reports out that Washington really likes Locker...and PFT said that the Jags really like Ponder. They also had Kaepernick going to Seattle in round 1, with Mallett sliding to round 2. Kaepernick is a guy I wouldn't mind in round 2 if we pass on a QB.
