A meaningless thread. I thought we were going to see some real stats that mattered.

If throwing a lot of passes for a lot of yardage made for a great QB then Drew bledsoe and Kerry Collins would be 2 sure hall of famers.

    Effectiveness is what matters.

Who had better stats than Cam Newton?

Newton's passing rating, completion % and TD to int ratio were better than any year Peyton Manning had at UT.

Justify that statement. Newton had a better passing rating than VY had in 2005. His TD to int ratio was better and he ran for more yardage.

I think it is also safe to say that Vy had the better team around him look at how many of those guys are in the NFL.

So Cam had the better stats and the lessor team but won every game. So how then was VY "way better"?

Where is Prag anyway? Can't remember the last time i have seen a post of his @ Gotitans. We know Dave had a big hate on for Cam Newton.

The bottom line is for every good QB with a whole lot of throws in college you have as many guys with a bunch of throws that sucked as NFL QBs.

Newton was VERY effective when he threw the ball and his average yards per attempt is a ridiculous 10+. Gabbert by example is around 6. So Newton hit on 66% of his throws for over 10+ average per attempt. That is damn good.

I guess someone could argue Young was a better college QB than Newton but who cares? Newton accomplished as much or more in one season than Young accomplished in three and Newton arguably played in a tougher conference on a less talented team.
What really matters is Newton is a better pro prospect than Young. His delivery, release, footwork are all better at this point of his career. Newton also doesn't appear to have mental problems. If you like Young you should love Newton.

I have no problem with his ability as a QB. It's hard to project any college prospect - if it were easy every pro team would hit on every draft pick. But he has easily shown enough in college to prove he could make it in the NFL. Not will but could.

At this point I just want someone with a decent arm and incredible work ethic. I'm not sold on Newton for his self-discipline, but purely based on physical skills and college production it's hard to say he isn't the best option at QB.

Because Vince Young actually took games over and WON them when they shouldn't have been won. Cam did that once.

And their stats are almost identical- but VY was a FAR more impressive thrower in college. And that's saying very little for Newton. VY couldn't hit guys in stride or in route. Neither can Cam.

VY threw it like a sidearmed girl in college just like he does today. He's accurate but his touch passing doesn't compete with Cam's overhand delivery that actually has enough zip on the ball to make him an elite passer at the pro level.

I love Vince but the dudes never going to be a 25 TD guy in the NFL because of his throwing style. Cam has the potential to be.

Did you watch VY at all this year? On a team that passes the ball, and if he could stay healthy he'd be a sure fire 25 TD guy. Oh and you know who else put enough zip on the ball to make himself an elite passer?

Cam Newton had 30 Tds and 7 ints. That is not much different than Vy's 26 Tds and 10 ints?

Cam had 30 Tds in just 280 pass attempts that is almost a TD on 11% of his passes!

So we have a QB who created over 10 yards of offense per pass and 10.7% of his passes were TDs. That is a producer!

That's why he makes me think of Roethlisberger.

And my biggest complaint about Newton is that when he broke contain and got away from the rush he was way to eager to pull it down and run. What would his stats had been if he had looked up field more?

Which of the 2 BCS champion QBs had the better team around him? There is no doubt about that.
