I see Newton going before #8.. we have just completed a 5 year saga in developing an athletic qb.. and no matter how good people project Newton to be, I don't see us trying to develop another superstar qb right now.. more likely we take a qb that has played in a pro-style system and develop him.. I see it being Gabbert at 8, or Ponder/Locker at 39.. If a Darius falls, I could see us taking him at #8, and Ponder/Locker at #39

I'd rather have Dareus at #8 and Locker/Ponder at #39. Gabbert is a project QB as well. He did not play in a pro style offense in college, and needs just as much work as Cam. Personally, assuming we are going with the west coast offense, Ponder is the most NFL ready for that system and is a perfect fit. That being said, he would still need a year or two of developing behind a veteran.
We take Dareus at #8, move Jones to DE and our line is a strength again.

I'm confused by the comparisons between Jamarcus Russel and Cam Newton. Nothing about these gbs is similar, one is a mobile passer, and the other is a slow statue. Kinda makes me wonder what the underlying issue is here.......:?:

They both had amazing workouts where they looked awesome passing against defenses made of air.

They both haven't proven that they can read a defense or run anything other than the most basic of plays.

Both are thought to be lazy (well, we know that Russell is) and not willing to put in the time needed to become a complete quarterback.

It's a valid comparison in those ways.

Isn't what Gabbert ran in college pretty similar to the west coast offense?

Somewhat, it had some similarities in that it was an offense designed to get the ball out of the QBs hand's fast, but it was also a one read offense, designed for the QB to make one read, and if it's not there take off. It was also an offense designed for the QB to take the snap from the shotgun instead of under center. In a west coast offense, the QB is asked to make very quick multiple reads and get the ball out on time. Gabbert is very accurate on his short to intermediate throws, so he could be a good fit for the west coast, he just needs to time to develop. I just do not think there is a QB in this draft like Ryan, Sanchez, or Bradford that is ready to come in and start from day one.

Gotcha. I was basically looking at the throws that Gabbert made and the throws that Alex Smith struggles with in the wco. From that perspective, I think he would be a good fit.

I have no reason to believe that Gabbert wouldn't do the work to make the right decisions. I'd still MUCH rather have Von Miller or Dareus.

I'm beginning to open up to the idea of drafting Newton. Who knows, he could be everything Vince wasn't, with the talent Vince was.

draft Newton or Mallett, let them sit behind a veteran for a full season and a half, then let them take over. I've noticed QB's who are drafted high and sit for a while to learn the game, pan out a lot more often than the ones who start from the get go.

What does that say about Cam Newton that he was willing to hook up with George Whitfield who runs QB coaching clinics in San diego to coach him along with Warren Moon? Pretty sound decision that indicates he is serious about improving himself and willing to work hard to do that.

He certainly knows what kind of people to take advice from.
