The Titans depth chart at QB is pretty much non-existent at this point. There are numerous ways to go about fixing this I suppose, but in acknowledging that no obvious franchise type QB will be on the team's roster in 2011, how do the Titans approach the position going forward?

I see various Andrew Luck posts, but I refuse to believe that the Titans will be in a position to draft Luck in 2012... unless his stock falls as it did with Jake Locker.

Not at all relevant... Luck's father backed-up Warren Moon early in his career in Houston. I remember seeing a fan at the Astrodome holding a sign that read "Shoot the Moon! Win with Luck!". Even HOF'ers have their "haters".

Anyways... I've always been a big believer in competition. I always thought it was something lacking in Fish's treatment of VY. Even when a team has a legit blue-chip prospect at the QB position... make them win the job for f*** sakes... don't have them compete with a guy who's clearly signed to be a back-up (KFC). A job truly earned is a job appreciated... a job that's gifted is one that's apt to be taken for granted.

This season, I think the Titans might be best served to avoid the temptation for a "blue chip" prospect in the first round and instead opt for a open competition to between some perceived lesser QB's.

Is it realistic to suggest a trio of Mark Bulger, Matt Flynn and a 2nd tier rookie such as Ponder? I think this would offer up some good competition in August. It's not unreasonable to believe that in the short term one of either Flynn or Bulger would rise to the occasion and fill this season's need at the position and both Ponder and Flynn offer up some potential long term.

The thing I like about this scenario is that it leaves the club free to choose a defensive play maker in the first round and avoids them putting their future in the hands of whichever QB they'd take at #8 overall.

I think that Bulger is one guy that has not gotten alot of attention. I liked him with the Rams. He had some good seasons, then got beat up for his last couple of seasons with them. He had last season basically off to recover. I could see him doing well here also.

As for Flynn, I think that he really has not shown enough to me to earn an outright starting position, so I like your thinking. Problem is that, even though he really has not earned it, IMO some team will play a "Scott Mitchell" card for him, and it will either boom or bust.

I agree that, regardless of who we pick up as a FA, QB needs to be a priority in the draft. I do not think that anyone is worthy as a #8 pick, so I see us either going D early or trading down for some value, such as Kolb as mentioned by Chamgel in another thread, then going QB either late first round or round 2.

I would love to see a competition personally, but there is another QB I want as a free agent, Chad Pennington. I just love the guys leadership, and he would be a great mentor to both Flynn and Ponder. Especially if we are going to a west coast offense that is predicated on getting the ball out quickly and accurately.

If Bulger is our starter in 2011 then we will be in position to get Luck.

    I'll take Hasslebeck then Kaepernick/Ponder.

saying that Fisher lacked to give VY competition at the QB position is one of the most unintelligent things I've ever read. VY never had the job security most QBs had, he was ALWAYS looking over his shoulder, he couldn't afford to mess up (like where were you all last season?) Thats the whole reason he exploded on Fisher.

You highlight a realistic problem. The obvious snag with the type of trade required to get someone like Flynn is not in the compensation required by the Packers, it lies in the fact that it's generally understood in these type of deals that the player being acquired will receive a beefy new contract (a contract almost assuring said player a starting position). So a scenario such as the one I've put forward would mean the Titans would be investing quite a bit in the QB position both in the terms of salary and draft picks (a 2011 2nd round pick for whichever QB they decide to select and either a 2011 3rd or 2012 2nd to acquire Flynn).

If healthy, I think Pennyboy wouldn't be a bad option. (a big if :) )

If Bulger is starting then he beat out both Flynn, and Kaepernick/Ponder... which means he probably wasn't playing too bad. If you want to insert Matt H in the scenario instead of Mark B the point is still the same in my mind. I'd wouldn't be comfortable with signing either simply to be the starter, but brining either in to compete for the job with at least one other viable option is something I'd be in favour of.

Glad I could be of service, and please let's forget I even mentioned it. Let's try to keep this on 2011.

I don't think the front office will spend the money to sign (and/or trade for) two free agent QB's, but I do like the idea and think its realistic to have competition in training camp. I'd love to see three QB's other than Rusty on the roster for training camp, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think the most likely scenario is that a vet such as Bulger, McNabb, or Pennington is brought in and then the Titans draft the best available QB in the 2nd or 3rd round, probably a guy like Ponder, Dalton, or Mallett (I doubt Locker slips that far, but it could be him if he miraculously did). Honestly, I see the Broncos keeping Orton and it seems clear the Bengals are intent on keeping Palmer. I also think Hasselbeck stays in Seattle for at least one more season after their surprising playoff run.

I'm not buying that Matt Flynn is the answer, at least not yet. If the price for him was reasonable I'd be all for giving him a shot, but the sample size to tell if he's ready to succeed as a starter is just too small. Also let us not forget that they'll want to have a solid backup in Green Bay given Rodgers' proclivity for running.

Good scenario and I also believe an open competition would be a good format for choosing the 2011 QB.

None of the options appeal to me. I don't want to have a good season. I want to win a Super Bowl.
