As much as I am against Julio at #8, I would much rather have him then Cam Newton. I would rather take Julio in round 1, and Locker or Ponder in round 2 then Cam at #8. There is not a QB ready to come in and play from day 1. It's time this franchise had a pocket passer. My one exception in the draft is Colin Kaepernick because he can be had in round 2. Has the strongest arm in the draft, accurate, is already working on his mechanics, and showed in the Senior Bowl that he will keep his eyes down field when scrambling. Scouts have described him as VY with a better attitude. Personally, I would rather have Locker or Ponder in the 2nd, but I would not be upset with Kaep....

I'm glad you posted a thread about this because I think Mallett is someone we should definitely consider and up until the Sugar Bowl I think many of us on this board wanted the Titans to draft him and after that the Mallett love started fading.

The thing about the Sugar Bowl is the players around him didn't make plays. He had 3 perfect throws that would have been touchdowns that were dropped and also many other passes dropped. That is not his fault. He can hit players in the numbers all day but if they dont' make the catch there's nothing he can do.

Now to his character concerns. I've done a lot of research on the subject and I can trace almost all of it to one scout who said, "I've got stuff on Ryan Mallett that you wouldn't believe." That scout (whose name seems to escape me) has yet to say what that "stuff" is and for some reason Mallett's stock plummetted after that. Like the whole NFL took this one guys word for it and decided he was right without checking into it further. That could be a good thing for the Titans. If they feel they need to get stronger on the defensive line and take someone like Dareus, or if they feel they need to take a LB like Miller it's quite likely Mallett will still be on the board, day 2 at pick 40. If he's there then, I say we jump. His arm strength is so good, I think when he enters the league as a rookie, he will have the best arm in the NFL.

I'm sure NFL teams will do their due diligence, if there is something, they'll find it. As for his actual abilities, he lacks touch, short to medium accuracy, and mobility. He could fit in somewhere like Joe Flacco, but he needs time to throw. He's not worth the #8 pick at all though.

I work at a hospital in Rogers, AR and that is about 20 minutes from Fayetteville. I have met some hospital employees on weekends that are Arkansas students during the week and most of them do not like Mallett because he is a jerk but I asked about other bad behavior but they don't know of any criminal/evil type activities. They just say that he thinks he should always be the center of attention.

It is highly unlikely Ponder makes it to the 3rd, and Kaepernick has moved into the 2nd in many mocks....I think we will need to take the QB we want in round 2. That is the one position you do not wait on...

There has been "talk" about Mallett's off-field stuff since he left Michigan.

We know that he got a public intoxication. I've heard, second hand, that he likes to smoke weed.

That is pretty common among college athletes, the cocaine allegations are what concern me.

Why? We went to a super bowl with Mcnair and Young has about the best winning % of any QB in franchise history.

We have had a pocket passer since 2006. His name is Kerry collins. Who did we win more with Young or Collins? Both played on the same teams.

Smoking a little weed or getting drunk is basically a rite of passage for any college student outside the state of Utah. Coke is a whole different thing.

As for drafting a franchise Qb in rd 2? It happens obviously. Favre was one and also Cunningham and Esiason in the mid 80s. But it is not common and there is something about a big time college QB getting passed over one time by every single nfl team that seems to matter.

If you want a franchise Qb you almost always have to get that player in rd 1.
