I like that scenario and based on those picks falling like that then Jones would be the best athlete available. 2 top CBs and 2 top Dts gone. We are not drafting a DE. No safeties worth picking there. It's either Jones or a QB since we would have our pick of every QB in the draft.

    Looking at the Titan WRs..

While both Cook a hybrid TE-WR and Williams showed us some skills this year i don't know if either did enough for us to totally bank on them especially if Britt goes down for a period of several games.

Williams looked good in the slot mainly running 10 yard routes but is he a downfield threat and can he be successful on the outside as a #2 like WR? Maybe.

Justin Gage was mentioned he will be gone. An UFA i doubt of we try very hard to keep him and i'll predict that he still has no team when teams break camp. Only a preseason game or 2 into camp will somebody see the need to sign him if a WR goes down with injury.

Hawkins can no longer be seen a a developing player but rather a wasted pick.

Another quality WR would guarantee that we have enough play makers in every game.

    The case against Julio Jones..

    1. One could argue that Jones is no better a prospect than Kenny Britt or Haseem Nicks(Big strong, fast) from the 09 draft 2 players taken at the end of that draft. If Jones is viewed as comparable but not better doesn't that diminish his value at 8? Remember that was perhaps the best draft ever for Wrs especially in the first rd. Every kid taken in rd one is a productive player.

    2. Assuming we pass on Jones at 8 and draft defense can we get a guy close to as good with our high rd 2 pick? Answer probably not. The next 3 best WR prospects(Bladwin, Hankerson, Smith) will likely be off the board by the time we pick again. The kid from Southern Miss is huge but unproductive due to injury. Little has an injury history and Jernigan is more of a slot type receiver similar too and no better than Williams.

    3. Is there a freakish Jared cook type athlete that could fall to us in rd 3 assuming we have a 3rd rd pick? Yes Deandre Brown Southern Miss 6'5 240. Not real fast but someone worth taking a chance on at that point in the draft.

Jones has had games in his career where he was not effective but he has been a big game player. His 3 best games last year were against South Carolina, Tennessee and Auburn. He is also one of those guys that will make an impossible catch one play and then drop an easy ball on the next play kind of like Britt.

Paea wouldn't be a reach at #8. I have seen multiple sites having him as our pick and he would be my pick as well if Dareus is gone. He is an impact player that fills a hole at our weakest position on D. Fixing the interior of the dline will go a long way to improving the D. Take Deandre McDaniel (SS from Clemson) in round 2 and we come out of the first 2 rounds with 2 impact players at positions of need. Julio is an elite talent as well, but Fisher is in a must win now situation, and every elite team he has coached has had one characteristic, a dominant Dline. The quickest way for him to get to the playoffs this year is to fix the D. Now, if we sign Big Al, and Amukamara is off the board, I could see Julio as a fit, but as things stand right now, it's gotta be defense with the talent there.

People only have him going to us because the need of a DT, IMO he's not a top 10 talent that was the point I was trying to make. Now I don't think we will draft a WR but I was just making a case that Julio might be the best pick if the draft goes like what I posted.

I really don't think our defense is as bad as everyone thinks and no one even knows who we're going after in free agency and I see everyone on here who doesn't want a QB in the 1st have defense pretty much every round for us. The offense still needs work another lineman and a WR because outside of Britt we don't have a big threat.

Remember Derrick Morgan will be back next season, that's pretty much an extra first round draft pick. Even though he's not a DT we can still go with that position in the 2nd round. Washburn is the best DL coach in the NFL, I'm really not worried about drafting a DT in the first round I'm just keeping an open mind about Julio.

Yeah, just like we'd be "unstoppable" with Randy Moss... right fellas??

    It never works that way.

Don't get me wrong...I love Julio, but as deep as the WR talent is in this draft, and as bad as our D is,..Id rather see us take Paea or Amukamara in round 1 to upgrade the D and get a WR like Jonathan Baldwin, Greg Little, Terrance Tolliver, or Tytus Young later on. The drop off in dline and CB talent, especially after Amukmara is off the board, is far greater then that of the WRs in the later rounds.
I think our defense is as bad as everyone thinks. Tulloch and Hope have become liabilities in pass coverage, and we got zero push on the interior of the dline. Our line wore down as the season went on, which not only killed the pass rush, but allowed teams to run the ball down our throat. Bringing in Haynesworth or drafting Paea/Dareus can fix the dline, and help the run game and mask the pass coverage issues some, and finding a safety in the draft or free agency to replace Hope shouldn't be too hard. I would love to see Singletary brought in as DC, mainly because I think we would show much more discipline under him, but also because of the work he could do with our LBs. A change at coordinator is needed, but so is an upgrade of the overall talent on our D. Saying that, I would like to see us bring in another big WR, in games when Britt went down, or was hurt, we were unable to generate much offense at all. We also need help on the interior of the oline, which is why in the mock I did, I had us taking Moffitt in round 3 and Kirkpatrick in round 4 with a compensatory pick or round 5.

There is either two scenarios we draft Julio or not. It just depends on what we do in the 2nd and 3rd round. If we go Julio and then get Drake Nevis in the 2nd and Brandon Harris in the 3rd that would be great or we can go Dareus/Paea in the 1st then maybe Kyle Rudolph in the 2nd then go CB/LB in the 3rd

EDIT: I'm just giving out scenarios even though going with Julio wouldn't be the best move immediately for the team I'm just giving some reasons why he might be a good choice and we shouldn't dismiss the WR position

I know what you're doing Burner, it's a good discussion. Personally, I would be fine with your first scenario, even though I doubt Brandon Harris is there in the 3rd, you could swap him with Chekwa from Ohio State and it'd still be a fine first 3 rounds. I would actually consider swapping it to Quinton Carter, S from Oklahoma, because I think safety is a bigger need then corner. Take Nevis if he falls to us in round 2, if not go Marvin Austin, who is a lot like Haynesworth was coming out of college, dominant when he wanted to be, but had plays he took off. As a 2nd round pick I would be willing to roll the dice to see if Washburn could get the most out of him.
Of your 2 scenarios, I actually like the one with taking Julio in round 1, I think that builds the talent on the roster more then the one taking Rudolph in round 2, and I say that as a Notre Dame fan that has watched every snap he has ever taken at ND. Rudolph does everything well, but nothing really great. And he is always dealing with injuries, a good comparison for him is Todd Heap, very solid while he is on the field, just a matter on how much he will be.
