Many regular posters may already know my stance on next years potential lockout, but for those of you using that very scare tactic to back your arguments, just stop. Here I have compiled a list of why the 2011 NFL season will kickoff just as the 2000-2010 seasons have.

1.) In March 2009, DirecTV renewed its deal to serve as the NFL's exclusive satellite carrier through the 2014 season. The deal is worth $1B annually.

2.) In May 2009, the NFL agreed to extend its multimillion dollar corporate sponsorships with FedEx, Visa, IBM, and Proctor & Gamble beyond the 2011 season.

3.) In 2009, ESPN’s Monday Night Football (MNF) ratings and viewership were up 17% and 20%, as compared to 2008. Fox had its most-viewed season ever (19.1 million) and its highest-rated season since 1995. Fox ratings increased 9% in 2009, marking its biggest year-over-year increase ever. NBC’s Sunday Night Football (SNF) had its best season in 2009 with a 17.4% increase in viewership.

4.) In 2009, NFL games attracted an average audience of 16.6 million viewers, an increase of 2 million viewers, or 14%, from 2008 and the highest average audience since 1990.

5.) In February 2010, the NFL was seeking to acquire the newly formed United Football League (UFL). Such a move would further illustrate the league's attempts to restrict player mobility and strengthen its monopoly of professional football.

6.) In February 2010, Verizon Wireless agreed to a four-year, $720M media rights deal to replace Sprint as the NFL’s exclusive wireless partner.

7.) In May 2010, Anheuser-Busch and the NFL agreed to a six-year, $1.2B deal to become the official beer sponsor of the NFL beginning in 2011, one of the largest sponsorship deals ever.

8.) Prior to the start of the 2010 season, both Fox and NBC’s regular-season advertisement spots were more than 95% sold, which is 20% above last year’s pace. Similarly, CBS and the NFL Network’s regular-season advertisement spots were more than 90% sold.

9.) Fox’s 4:00 pm telecast of the Packers vs. Eagles game was the most-watched Week One game in its history, while NBC’s Week One SNF game featuring the Cowboys at the Redskins was the most-watched opening week primetime game in 14 years.

10.) In Week-1 of the 2010 season, ESPN averaged an 8.6 rating and 13.574 million viewers for its two MNF telecasts, the highest-rated and most-viewed season-opening doubleheader since the format started in 2006.

Now the NFL and it's owners were all well aware of this potential lockout when they signed all these new contracts with these sponsors. Are you telling me they'd knowingly void these very contracts by not producing a football season in 2011? No, the NFL wants to make money, and the NFLPA wants their fair cut. That's all. No one makes money with a lockout.

There is a law suit being decided on right now on whether the Networks have to continue paying the teams even if there is a lockout. This decision will be the biggest going forward.

Scare tactic? Look, I doubt any of us have an agenda. We're just stating very real possibilities.

EDIT: I just the read the rest of your post. I'm pretty sure the NFL gets paid regardless of whether or not the season happens. That's why the owners have no incentive. They just lose ticket sales, etc. I may be completely wrong though.

From this Forbes article: "The largest factor in a possible lockout stems from how the NFL’s agreements with their network partners are worded. The NFL would get still get paid for the TV rights, regardless if games are played."

Looks like it all boils down to money, big surprise. There will be no lockout, the Players Association has too much to lose. They can come to a deal and get paid or get nothing. Pretty simple to me.

To me, if a lock out happens, I will probably stop watching the NFL all together.

What kind of selfish rearends do this during one of the worst times for the American economy. Thousands of people have lost their homes through very little fault of their own, yet your greed continues to grow?

Seriously? Do you guys not get paid enough? Atleast wait until the sting of all this has gone, its insulting.

This is my thinking too. I know both sides want their money but I don't like hearing these multi-millionaires who couldn't hack it in the real working-class world complain about not getting their fair share. They play football, they don't run the business, they shouldn't be entitled to anything more than their own salaries.

Don't even get me started on who could actually hold a decent job outside the NFL. I never even thought of that.

If this were to happen, and say there's only 8 games, we could reduce, terminate or suspend Fisher's contract on 20 days’ notice. Or reduce his salary by 50 percent if a lockout continues for more than 90 days, terminate the employee without pay on 60 days’ notice, or extend the contract another year at the same terms as 2011 if at least eight NFL games are canceled due to a lockout.

I don't want a lockout by any means, but it might not be such a bad thing. The NHL improved drastically after theirs, hopefully if their is a lockout the NFL does as well.
