I agree and that is my hold point.

And this list is all the athletes that have come into the league and considered athletic guy or running QB's at some point.

    I did forget Tebow though!

Basically these guys had one snap to full careers and were consider by analyst to be dual threats.

Mobile QBs have won the Super Bowl many time. The difference is that they could also pass.

Steve Young, Roger Staubach, Elway, etc. All mobile but they could make every pass, read the defense, leadership, etc. They were mobile when necessary. A bonus.

Seattle or Minnesota will win the NFC title with their mobile QB next year. You heard it hear first.

If a QB cannot read defenses, cannot learn the plays, and leans on his physical ability only, then he will fail, regardless of whether he can run or not. Sooner or later, his lack will affect the other players. This is what happened this season.

    Good post!

No matter what kind of quarterback you are if college as not set you up to read defenses then you have a difficult transition to the NFL.

So what should be done is; Regardless if you are running an option or spread offense in college the coach or the player should go to the other person and say even though we are running this "I, You" need to learn how to read defenses.

He is a close call. Most seasons he ran the ball around 4-5 times a game which is right in between what I would call a mobile or running qb. In his MVP season his attempts were down to about 2 attempts per game.

The difference between a running QB and a mobile QB is not something the can be separated by statistics. Which is really unfortunate because stats are awesome when interpreted correctly. It is more of a subjective opinion of what do people notice about a certain player.

I think quarterbacks that are type casted as "running QB's" is because that is what people think when they here that players name. Players like Vick, Young, Tebow, and Newton the first thing people think about are their running prowess. It is because a majority of their success (wither it is at the NCAA or NFL level) has come from their ability to tuck ball.

"Mobile QB's" on the other hand are able to pass well enough so that their athletic ability seems like something of a bonus. Players like Roger Staubach and John Elway left their mark on the league with their arm not their ability to run with the football. It is a perception that actually IS reality.

When defenses gameplan for Vick's and Young's the main thing they think about is how are they going to contain them for running outside they pocket and making plays with their legs. They make this their top priority because they know if they do that the quarterback loses the most viable threat it has on the field. If people tried to game plan for Elway and Staubach like they did for Vick and Young then it would end horribly for them.

In the end though it doesn't really mater how well a QB can run that makes him successful it is how he throws. The three major things an NFL quarterback needs are maturity/leadership skills, decision making skills, and accuracy. 9/10 a player that is perceived as a "running QB" is weak in one of these areas.

Teams don't gameplan for a guy who is just mobile. They don't use a spy for a guy who is just mobile and the DEs don't cheat wide fora guy who is just a decent scambler. A runner like a young Steve Mcnair they have to account for him.

There is a fine line between taking off and running too soon vs waiting that extra half second for a receiver to spring open. That's why i value yards per attempt when looking at a good running QB who runs often. Are they missing opportunities for big plays down the field to get 6 yards running?

Another thing is third down effectiveness. A 5 yard run is highly effective when it is 3rd and 4.

On both counts Cam Newton was outstanding this year.
