Cruds, if your company wasn't achieving its goals, there would be a manager within screaming for the 1/2 lb bags to double the sales and revenue.

I am certainly not making any assumption that I can run all aspects of the FO better than what is being done now. I am simply pointing out that I believe the Titans would benefit from not being so reticent to taking a chance on a "ifirst tier" FA (or trade) when there is a glaring need. It has been debated that successful teams don't do it, they do. It has been debated that the Titans do take a chance when they need to, I feel just not often enough- particularly this year. The cap situation and effects have been explored if many large scale acquisitions were to occur- I have clarified that only one or two every few years when the needs arise is all I'm talking about. It has been argued that even one or two would strap our ability to field depth, I've replied that one or two could be done in a budget neutral fashion.

I don't get it. I don't undertand why so many folks are provoked by the idea the Titans could handle FA/trades a little better than we do now. I understand and respect the arguments (i took exception with some of the techniques) but I simply don't agree that the front office could not be handling the situation better or that it is impossible for our organization to engage in one or two FA signings every so often without severely jeopardizing the future of the franchise. There is always room for improvement.

I don't believe it was just luck that allowed some "successful" organizations to field teams that go deep in the playoffs. I believe it is a combination of FO personnel moves and coaching as well. IMO, all facets of this organization warrant criticism until we field a team that can go deep in the playoffs.

I agree with TJ, there really is nothing left to say and we have hit an impasse on agreement on this issue.

I'm glad that you're willing to let it go, but I guess the reason you face so much resistance is that there isn't a clear solution to your criticism, and you don't ever propose one.

You say that we should take more risks with top tier free agents. People respond with how risky it is, how rarely it works, and how we do sign solid free agents, to a lesser extent. You come back with saying that we shouldn't go crazy, we should just do more. "More" isn't very specific, to me it just sounds like you saying "we should be better!" which is ok, and I'm sure it's very therapeutic for you, but it's not very constructive, and quite frankly, isn't that much fun for everyone else to read.

You want us to be better. Does anyone disagree with that?

You point out that teams that draft really well and sign free agents that turn out well have won championships... well, duh! I think we all agree that it's important, and you have to do well with your moves in order to succeed on the field. Hindsight makes all decisions that succeed look better, and all decisions that lead to failure look bad.

There's a small margin of error. The team is far from perfect, but many people agree with the overall strategy for free agency and drafting. (Moreso than coaching decisions lately, anyway)

You have a right to complain. We disagree with your complaints. No reason for you to be provokec with the reponse you get anymore than we should be provoked by your free agency complaints every year.

    It's a vicious cycle.

Can't speak for Riverman, but what I find unfathomable is the mindset of "NEVER" sign a first-tier expensive free agent.

    Never is a powerful word.

Somehow things have been sensationalized that some of us want to sign a top tier free agent every offseason. My guess is that because some of us chime in every year wanting a different top tier free agent that we think can help the Titans, that we are somehow labeled as not understanding the concept of the salary cap. That couldn't be further from the truth. If we had retained AH for example, it would make it much more understandable that we don't sign a high dollar free agent because of needing adequate cap space in future seasons.

Then you have the mindset that signing one top tier high dollar free agent somehow causes you to cut and/or not re-sign 3 high quality starters. Again, I'm guessing this mindset has been brought about because of our cap purge history. As myself and others have pointed out, what about signing a high tier free agent, and then not signing Ryan Fowler, Jamie Winborn, Jovan Haye, Rod Hood, etc. We sign a lot of 1-2 million dollar a year guys that really don't end up contributing much. But somehow that is ok, while signing a superstar is not.

Then you have the mindset that NO expensive free agent ever makes a difference for a superbowl team. You mention Burress for the Giants and it's the retort that he was signed years before they won the superbowl. That's kind of the point. Free agency is another tool in which to build up a roster. You mention players on teams that lost the Superbowl and it's "well they aren't better than us, they didn't win a superbowl" but yeah, they made it to one.

Then, on top of everything else, you actually have 4 or 5 posters in another thread glorifying the fact we have spent $40 million less than the Cowboys. Like somehow that's something to be excited about? Like, if we win a superbowl it will mean more that we spend less than half the league? Somehow Bud Adams saving money is something I should be excited about?

That sums it up for me as why I find the debate baffling.

    I'm confused then.

TitanJeff specifically says "It's a balancing act. Look at the Titans salary cap last year." then links the website.

So what you're saying is those players salaries last year don't match their cap hit? I can understand that assuming they got paid their signing bonus but it's really pro-rated throughout a few years as a cap hit.

Still, I would rather not have signed Nate Washington or Jovan Haye if it meant we could've had Asante Samuel and keep the rest of the roster we have now. Or if not Samuel then Dansby. Or Boldin via trade.

I know one thing, it seems hard to find up-to-date accurate salary cap information or salary cap history.

^ Right. It's prorated, but on any given year, actually payroll can be more or less than money against the cap. Jeff has a confused. That links to the actual payroll. If that was money against the cap, the Dolphins and Giants would have been well over the $127 million cap limit.

I can't figure out why we still discuss the cap with exception to it's impact on our history. I don't think we'll have a salary cap again, IMO.

Wow, I have to say that would really shock me.

However, I do not believe the new CBA will be finalized before the 2011 season, and that we'll either see scab players start the season, or an abbreviated 2011 season.
