The biggest FA signing wasn't really a FA signing at all and that was the Kevin Carter deal. The team gave up a 1st round pick and still paid him big money. But that was the kind of deal could have "elevated our defense" and it really back fired in hind sight. The money spent ended up being a large part of the reason we got into CAP hell. Those kind of deals are risky.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing the team go after a guy like Peppers once in a while. Especially when DE was our biggest need and a pass rush is most critical to our defense. Add in letting AH go and that kind of move could pay off.

The Dansby idea I thought was a decent one as well. We lose KB, as well as his salary so why not plug in a OLB to fill that need. What would have been the difference in real money compared to signing Witherspoon? 4 mil a year? For that matter how much more is Peppers than KVB was? Last year KB's salary CAP figure was a whopping 9 mil. KVB's was 6.5. Seems like for that kind of money we might have been able to sign Peppers and Witherspoon and reduced our draft needs considerably.

Great point. I wish our FO thought like this. KVB was way overpaid when you weigh his salary vs. his production.

How was Sharper the most important player for his team when they were one of the worst ranked passing defenses in the league and he is a free agent one year after being 'the most important player'?

Thornton, Hope and Scott are more value then Sharper.
Thornton was better then Bulluck for a few years here.
    Hope has been an all-pro.
Scott was part of a Line that sent CJ to 2000 and allows very few sacks overall.

Sharper isn't all that important, he's a free agent remember. If you are so high on the Saints way, why didn't they resign him? WHO have that Saints signed? They've lost Grant and Sharper already on a defense that isn't all that great and the only reason that defense improved last season is Greg Williams.

The only reason the Saints won the Superbowl is Drew Brees. Not Shockey and not Sharper.

I don't adamantly support it. I just see reality and not Madden.
And it is only because of Drew Brees the Saints won a superbowl. They are not the blue print for success.

And been proven right by countless others. It rarely succeeds.

    Irrelevant.

    On who?
Chris Johnson? Kenny Britt? Michael Griffin?

You'll need to find a quote from anyone who has said you have no validity because you haven't gone into detail about the salary cap effects?
If you think managing a salary cap is easy...then all I can do is laugh. If you think evaluating players is "not that hard" then you will need to explain why all these professional constantly get it wrong. You'll also need to show how easy it is and tell us who you said will be great and who will be a bust.

Good for you, except you post 'aww the titans didn't get Dansby. We suck at free agency'

Yeah it's almost like using fanboy isn't it.

And? The con against Cromartie is he is an expensive Nick Harper who cannot tackle.

And all you say is "aww I didn't get ma boy Dansby. We suck"

Seriously have you done ANY research on Sharper and the Saints? They went from 22nd / 221 passing yards per game to 26th / 235 passing yards per game.
Sharper didn't improve their secondary at all. So what do you want a guy like him for?

Like I said before, Gregg Williams is the main reason for their defense. Sharper isn't.

And a guy like Brees rarely hits free agency. Asante Samuel isn't going to lead us to a Superbowl.

You really want to make this argument?

"On October 4, 2009, Sharper returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown, the longest in Saints history. It was also his second 95+ yard interception return for a touchdown for the season. On October 25, Sharper returned his third interception for a touchdown on the season, a team record. At the end of Week 8, on Monday Night Football, Sharper intercepted a pass from Atlanta's Matt Ryan to help keep the Saints' perfect record. It was his seventh interception of the season. On November 30, once again on Monday Night Football, Sharper intercepted a desperation pass from New England's Tom Brady and returned it 35 yards, leaving him 4 yards short of the NFL record for interception return yards in a season, set by Baltimore's Ed Reed in 2004.

Sharper then broke that record in a December 27 game against Tampa Bay, intercepting Josh Freeman's pass and returning it 21 yards. This gave him 9 interceptions on the year and 376 return yards (including 3 interceptions returned for touchdowns). It was the 63rd interception of Sharper's NFL career, tying him for sixth on the all-time list.[7] The following week, Sharper was selected for his fifth Pro Bowl. His 376 interception return yards broke the NFL single season record of 358 previously held by Ed Reed."

Really? Greg Williams is the ONLY reason that defense improved? :ha:

I'm guessing Sharper wants to get paid. He's also older so maybe that's scaring some teams away?

    What about Greg Williams? :ha:

What about that Peyton Manning int? :ha:

Why is signing a high dollar free agent referred to as the Madden method?

    But it does work.

How is that irrelevant? You made the argument that Dansby can't be an OLB, which I dispute. But why immediately exclude him because of contract?

    <sigh>

Chris Henry, Pacman, Troupe, Laboy, Odom, Woolfolk, Calico?

I would even add Lendale to the list if we end up trading him. Don't think he was worth that 2nd rounder if he is already gone and given his previous production.

As I said, feel free to review my posting history. :)

I'm not saying a GM's job is easy. However it isn't that complicated to understand how a salary cap works. If you can make a budget you have at least a minimal understanding.

Pro's get players wrong for the same reasons "regular people" get players wrong. Stuff happens. People get injured. Or a player that looks good in college doesn't work hard as a professional. And sometimes it just don't work out.

But it's not that hard to spot talent.

Not signing Dansby is not the ONLY reason we suck at free agency.

And I wouldn't go as far to say we suck at it, but I don't think we are the best at it either. It's a tool that we don't utilize enough to bolster our team.

And? I found Riverman's opinion interesting and reading people's opinions on free agency and players is something I enjoy about visiting a football forum.

I think it's hilarious how much you devalue Sharper's contribution to the Saints last season.

The Saints were an offensive juggernaut. But Sharper was their best contributor on defense. Without some of his ints, the Saints record isn't as good last season.

That's your opinion. I'd take Asante's nine interceptions and see where it gets us.

Exactly. Williams's blitzing schemes created more pressure and provided more opportunities for take aways.

You gotta wonder why a guy with 9 INTs is a free agent and hasn't been signed yet. He must be that damn good huh.

    What about them?

It's not. If you read it properly you would see.

Based on what? How many Superbowls has Asante Samuel won? How much did Washington improve with every high priced signing they have done. Same with Oakland, what did Randy Moss do for them?

You assume too much. It is irrelevant because YOU wanted him. It has no bearing on anything.

sooo you entire argument is the Floyd Reese days, except for Chris Henry? Draft picks before we went 13-3?

Feel free to make a point

Too funny. In your budgeting for yourself and your 'cap' of $35,000 or whatever you earn do you deal with:

    Multiple people (say 52)
    Salary increases year over year
    Bonuses
    Incentives
    Cap hits

    Of the 13-3 team starters:

    Free Agents: 16
    Draft Picks: 12

    Cool....

And I find it funny that a guy, even with 9 INTs, is a free agent. Sounds like Ty Law to me.
Defensively, they were not better with him.

Ask the Chargers where Cromarties 10 got them. Or Ty Law's 10 got the Jets

I'm sure this is being talked about in other threads but...

There's actually some somewhat decent options out there still. Joey Porter for example. He's getting old, and he's a dick, but for now he's still a good football player. Furthermore, the best options we have at this point would likely be stop gap solutions. I probably like Reggie Hayward most from what's left at this point. He can be dominant at times, but he's battled injuries much of his career. He's also not that old at 30. The Jags are currently trying to resign him at vet minimum because they just signed Kampman.

    Yes (nowhere near 52)
    yes
    yes
    yes
    no

I really don't see what is so hard to grasp about a Salary cap. There is a floor and a limit. Players contracts' are distributed throughout the years, with higher and lower cap amounts for each season.

So Gunny, what do you think about our defense?

Is our team a superbowl contender? Are those expectations realistic? Would you want to improve any of our lineup? Just cool with whatever the front office does? Happy at CB and D-line?

Oh, I'm not surprised we have Psychop also thinking Sharper is just some meaningless cog in a system. And also wanting Joey Porter. :ha:

Here's Sharper's stats for his career with 3 different teams:
    http://www.nfl.com/players/darrensharper/profile?id=SHA500479

He's been extremely successful for three franchises now, but yeah, I'm sure it was all Greg Williams that made him return 95 yard ints. Yep. :drunk:

And he is about to turn 35. Maybe he just wants a big payday and everyone is reluctant because of age. Odds are he won't repeat last year's performance.

And I don't mean to diminish Greg Williams, yes he is successful and a made a huge difference for the Saints defense.

But Sharper broke the single season record for INT return yards!

:bsflag: You're just being an azz. Your idea of realism is to never criticize our management. I just don't know why you equate that people having an opinion critical of our FO equates to somebody "trying to be a GM". Your comments come off as arrogant when you suggest that your opinion is more "realistic" than somebody elses.

I understood the Sharper discussion to represent a free agent that the Saints brought in and took a chance on- like the Titans should. A rebuttal to the argument that "early" FA's rarely make a difference. Not necessarily that Sharper was somebody the Titan's should have brought in at the time the Saints did.

Again- Bodden was presented as an example of a FA we should at least "look at" but we didn't because we just don't often get involved early in FA. And it was argued that he was overpriced for his market value and too expensive an option for us. Have to admit I loved to see the Pats retain him thus proving his market value. The Dunta Robinson discussion (at least in my posts) was only in response to TJ's "pick from the list" post.

I think Cromartie was an excellent "value" that we are so fond of picking up. Your "Madden" assumption is not correct in this case. He has good to excellent return skills and he is a better cover corner than Harper- NO DOUBT. His fault is his run stopping- but IMO our need for a COVER corner is far greater than our need for a run stopping corner. We could have gotten for one year (uncapped btw) and a 3rd round pick- conditional to 2nd depending on the number of snaps (a condition that WE control). If he played well enough to get those snaps, he'd be worth extending and worth that 2nd round pick. Hell- it is possible that we could have even straight up traded LenDale for him and saved the picks. It was a "win-win" and we didn't even look at him (like we did Babin, etc). The idea was NOT generated by his "ESPN" name as you suggest.

I realize this thread is meant to polarize, hence the inflammatory title that TJ gave. It is just so unpleasant to discuss in a format where people misconstrue meaning, sensationalize an opposing viewpoint, or worst of all dishonestly engage in rhetorical arguments intended to frustrate others to attrition. Despite this, I think that most here, including yourself, share similar opinions regarding the proficiency of our FO. Namely, we are average to "pretty good" at staffing our personnel but could be better. And come on, is really THAT hard to admit that our FO DOES make some mistakes? I can certainly admit they get it right SOMETIMES. :)
