Berry can play all 4 spots IN COLLEGE- and I'm sure Mays can too.

However, neither can play CB in the NFL. No chance.

Taylor Mays just might be a Ronnie Lott type S or even Blaine Bishop. But he might also be Lamont Thompson. It's gonna be hit or miss.

    Well...

Players tend to 'grow' into a position and his 'natural-ness' and athleticism pretty much determine a players position assuming they have NFL caliber SKILLS at that position. Tebow is a good example...he's played forever and has the NFL body and athleticism for the position. But does he have the accuracy, footwork, throwing motion and ability to read defenses from a Pro Offense...? If he does not, his 'skills' will force a position change that suits his body type and athleticism.

Few players play a position in HS and stay at that same position in college and the NFL. A lot of times a HS RB develops into an OLB in his early college years and grows into a DE. What's his natural position?

Mays has the size and speed to be an elite weakside LB...but parts of his game are vastly superior and other parts average or below average. That's why he's not an easy transition while a guy like Jerry Hughes will be an easier transition to a 3-4 OLB. Outside of covering RB's and TE's one v one, Hughes has already done all the other things a 3-4 OLB does.

Mays has similar issues playing S (some parts of his game are awesome and other parts are weaknesses) which is why he's a tough guy to grade and a typical boom/bust candidate. The right team able to tailor it's defense to suit his strengths could get a super star. A team that tries to just plug him into their defense in which he will get matched up with the better TE's and RB's will be setting him up to fail.
