i give you the Baltimore Ravens.... last year a rookie coach and rookie qb and they fall one win from the super bowl and they just destroyed the patriots in their 1st playoff game this season.

picture if you will, the titans doin something like that? HA... i know funny right. our teams arent very different, good running team, solid D (usually), young QB etc. one huge difference, we're terrified of change!

and I give you...Todd Haley, Jim Schwartz, Tom Cable, Josh McDaniels, etc etc etc.

For every one coach that makes it, there are 3 or 4 who don't.

So let's see... of the current teams in the playoffs:

Cowboys- Wade Phillips: Hired in 2007
Packers- Mike McCarthy: Hired in 2006
Cardinals- Ken Whisenhunt: Hired in 2007
Eagles- Andy Reid: Hired in 1999
Saints - Sean Peyton: Hired in 2006
Vikings- Brian Childress: Hired in 2006

Colts- Jim Caldwell: Hired in 2009
Chargers- Norv Turner: Hired in 2007
Patriots- Bill Belichick: Hired in 2000
Ravens- John Harbaugh: Hired in 2008
Jets- Rex Ryan: Hired in 2009
Bengals- Marvin Lewis: Hired in 2003

Is anyone else seeing a trend here? The only coach hired before the year 2000 is one that is known to be unable to get over the hump, much like Fisher.

Oh, Gunny: Josh McDaniels ended the season 8-8. Same as the Titans. The other guys you mentioned inherited teams that didn't have over what? 4 wins last season?

Good examples! Especially considering the following:

    Todd Haley's Chiefs- Improved.
    Jim Schwartz's Lions- Improved.
Josh McDaniels' Broncos- Stayed the same.
    Tom Cable's Raiders- Improved.

    So...

What was your point? That teams are taking gambles by improving by 1 or 2 wins per season? Breaking even again? Fill me in.

If we improved as much as as any of those coaches (aside from McDaniels)... we would have made the playoffs.

wow great examples.... :ha: i usually enjoy ur post, but thats just ridiculous...
3 outta 4 of those teams are terrible and it dont matter who coaches them!
lions, chiefs, and raiders, seriously! lets not compare the titans and ravens to those teams....
    great try:rolleyes:

so who are we going to go get who is definitively better than jeff fisher?

bill cower isn't coming back. mike shanahan is in washington. jon gruden just signed a deal to stay with espn for the next few years.

something else to keep in mind, whoever it would be is going to bring in his own staff, meaning a new offense for vince young to learn after he's finally starting to put things together.

now is not the time for a coaching change. change for the sake of change isn't usually a good thing.

Pretty lame examples. I know Jim Caldwell is a great coach, but hell, my mother could coach The Colts w/Peyton Manning. The Cards have Kurt Warner, who is likely Canton bound. The Saints have Drew Brees, the gift that keeps on giving. And Brian Childress is coaching some has-been hack who's name escapes me. ;)

Great coaches will always bubble to the surface. But some have gotten some real gifts concerning the teams they inherited or personnel situations they walked into.

    Lame examples? Are you serious?

Those are ALL COACHES IN THE PLAYOFFS.

I didn't hand pick them. They just all happened to be hired before the year 2000 other than 1 (1999). That's no coincidence. Coaches get old. Their styles become outdated.

Which is why I used some of the worst new coaches, and showed that the others while their team was bad- STILL improved.

So we should wait til our team goes 2-14 to hire a new coach, just so they can't use that crutch.

Let's pretend the Jets defense didn't dramatically improve, or that their run game didn't get better, or that they're not playing with a rookie behind center... it was all inherited and all Mangini!...
