PS3 had a lot of issues too, just not near as many as 360. But to act like they had it together... eh. I've got at least 3 friends that have had theirs mess up, and Sony wants to rape them with charges to have them fixed.

I got a backwards compatible launch PS3 which is still going strong and I now have a slim PS3.

My 360 hasn't had a problem yet, neither has the Wii.

All systems have their problems, it's just that while the PS3 and Wii are in the "allowed" range of less then 5 - 10% failure the 360 was rumoured to have reached 33 - 50% which is simply unacceptable. They took a massive hit financially because of that.

I heard that people get the rrod because they play or leave their consoles on for 15hrs a day and have the console standing vertically in a low ventilated area. Im a noob to this so i won't act like i know all these things, that's just what i read.

you definitely should NOT have the 360 vertical, at least not the original ones. the HDD covers one vent and if you stand it vertically the other vent is closed by the surface it's sitting on.

About two months ago, a friend of mine bought a new wii. Within two days, it quit powering. She returned it and got another one. Within two days, it quit powering on. She returned it, and got her money back. I imagine it has a comparable failure rate. Two out-of-the-box wiis dead within four days. It's actually pretty common. You don't hear about it often, because it usually happens within the first three months, and most stores allow returns or exchanges within the first three months. I have a wii too, and have never had a problem out of it, but it does happen.

The reason it's rumored that the 360 has a higher failure rate is because where most consoles fail, they do it within the first week, or it doesn't even work out of the box. You may play your 360 for years - well past the warranty, and bam, RROD. This leads to more people complaining. I also have two xbox 360's. One of them had RROD, and I sent it in. The other had RROD, and I repaired it myself. That was about two years ago. Haven't had a problem out of either since.

My sons wii has had quite a few problems, but nothing serious. His stopped powering on, but I couldn't ever figure out why... later on it just magically started working again. Then, it did this again. It was down for a few months, then I came in and saw him playing it one day and he said "it just started working".

    Weird.

As for the xbox being on 15 hrs and all- no. Actually, the 2 times mine messed up were times when I hadn't played it near as much as usual. It's odd because it'll work fine, then the next day you sit down to play and you get the red lights.

But as someone else said- No to vertical and yes to a lot of ventilation. Keep it in an open spot, instead of under anything.

^^^ That's what happened to me on my RROD's. For the first one, I watched a DVD with no problems. Tried to turn it on four days later - RROD.

Most of the time it has to do with the heatsink on the GPU losing contact, which results in the box overheating. Most of the time, you can bend the legs on the GPU a little to strengthen contact, and all is well. Maybe reflow. I've repaired quite a few 360's. Most of the time, leaving them vertical isn't what causes the problem. Even if it did happen because it was played vertical, you would probably be able to lay it flat and get rid of RROD. The lack of ventilation damn sure doesn't help though. More heat increases the chance of losing solder and capacitors.
