He didn't have time to stand there and go through his reads the colts sent the house at him. Faulk was open just past the 30 he has been one of his most reliable 3rd down guys.

He might have had the first down it was really close but they had no time outs to challenge.

    Um...

In that game, the Colts had 14 possessions I believe and out of those 14 possessions, Peyton didn't score 90% of the time. 9 out of 14 possessions did not score so the % of him not scoring is in the D's favor if you punt it. The perception is that Manning is awlays successful on 4th qrtr come backs, but he's not. And frankly, even if they DID get the first down, you might still have to punt it to Manning with a minute plus left. Terrible call.

I agree with Sox...you go with your best WR's...Moss and Welker. As a presnap read, the Colts had 3v3 on Moss/Welker's side and 2v2 on Faulks side. Moss could run a fade or a fade stop and they wouldn't be able to defend it. Similarly, Welker is ALWAYS open at 6 yds or less because he runs these option routes. Welker was wide open and I'm VERY surprised Brady did not look to him. However, I think Dungy pointed it out before that Brady sometimes decides where he's going with the ball before the play starts and sometimes misses open guys because of it and this usually happens when the primary receiver is....FAULK! OOPS!!!

I re-checked the tape. Faulk DEFINITELY had a first down, no doubt about it. He bobbled the ball at the 31 and secured it...he puts his left leg out to try and stop the backwards momentum. His foot is inches short of the 30 yd line and it's at least a foot away from his body with the ball at his chest. At least half the ball would have been past the 30 yd line which is a first down. Somehow they marked the ball short of where his left foot was as if he was bobbling the ball all the way to the ground...which he clearly does not. Terrible spot.

As I said, bad call, bad decision by Brady, and a bad spot.

It wasn't a bad call by any means. It wasn't a politically safe call, but Belichick doesn't have much to worry about when it comes to job security so he made the call that gave his team the best chance to win. Fisher and most other coaches like to play it safe so they can say "I played it by the books, not my fault" if things go wrong.

Do you really think Manning going an extra 40 yards is that big of a difference? The colts were on a hot streak in the 4th quarter too (2 tds in last 2 possessions if I remember correctly).

He had over 2 minutes and 2 timeouts. The way the colts offense was playing on top of how tired the Patriots' defense was, he could have gone 170 yards, let alone 70. You also have one of the best passing offenses in the league with multiple reliable receivers and Tom Brady at the helm.

Even the ESPN stats that gave the Pats a 50 something percent chance of completing (which is very low in my opinion) backed it up from a statistical point of view. More than anything though, he put the game in the hands of his best players when it was on the line.

stats mean nothing to the individual.

You don't give Manning the ball at the 30. Ever.

Selective reading? The stats part wasn't even my argument, I just threw it in there. Besides, I'm pretty sure Belichick knows a little more about making decisions like that than the average fan that complains about them.
