The beginning of the end for both BR and DVD - as stated - iTunes/OnDemand type services will ultimately eliminate both...

    Doubt it.

  4. Your own source points to it somewhat:

Really? I don't know what's going on Australia Gunny but it took iTunes and its contemporaries about 5 minutes to all but obliterate music on CD. Bye Bye Tower Records, Peaches etc..
Movies are next. All you need to do is watch what Blockbuster is doing - closing down their physical stores and pushing their (and Netflix) download service - which you can do right thru your BluRay player. Ever wonder why Blockbuster isn't investing heavily in stocking BluRay discs in store? It's because that media is already being replaced

  6. Aussie internet access has some significant bandwidth caps. That probably colors Gunny's perception of the power of internet distribution.

Yeah our Internet sucks, I don't know how it is in the USA but more then half of the world don't have internet..at all, let alone fast enough speeds.
It significantly dents the marketing appeal if you only have a handful of people to offer it to.

Cruds - The difference between itunes and DD movies is that downloading a music file is 5MB, a movie is a lot more.
The potential for piracy is also greatly increased as well.

Then there is the want to have a hard copy.

  9. The countries that have major broadband access are really all they need to have a successful internet distribution model.

As for movie piracy, there's actually a better chance of piracy when it's delivered on a disc that's easy to rip and upload. But realistically, discs wouldn't go away just because a lot of people would use download distribution.

But it's still a limited market and cuts it down from what it is now to what it would be.
