Personally, I'm against it. Yes, it's more football, but 16 games seems to be working just fine. If you add more games, more injuries will come, playoffs may be less intense due to increased injuries, etc.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Precisely. You're lucky to make it thru 16 games without losing a major cog in your wheel, 18 games is just 8 more quarters to risk someone getting injured. If we could expand rosters then adding more games may be feasible, but why?

Sorry. I dont buy that. If baseball players can play 162 games, NBA players 82 games, NHL players 80 something games (OVER A NINE MONTH SEASON), then NFL players can play two more games over a 20 week season.
Don't give me that crap about football being that much harder on a person blah blah blah. Ice hockey players hit one another on the ice just as hard as NFL players, and at much higher speed. If they can last nine months in those conditions...with fewer/lighter pads, then NFL players can too.
There is a fairly easy way for NFL teams to adjust to this...ensure they have higher quality depth.

I have mixed feelings on this.

I hate a four-game preseason. I think they could easily go down to three.

But after 15 games of the regular season, there are usually no more than a handful of games which mean anything. Fans don't come out for many of the games where the team is out-of-it and those who don't gain anything by a win usually sit their best players.

Lets go ahead and expand it to 18 games and cutback on preseason games. The only good that comes out of preseason is the ability to learn who the backups are.

I'm in favor of 18 games instead of 16. At one point the NFL was playing a 14 game regular season, and look at where the league is now compared to then. I think it only improves the quality of the season. Now if we ever get to the day where were talking 20+ games then okay injuries will surely come in to effect, but for now it wouldn't be adding, it would be making 2 meaningless games meaningful. And just think about it this way; in 2006 had there been an 18 game season, could the Titans have made the playoffs? I think so.

The reason I feel the NFL is leaps and bounds above the NBA & MLB right now is because its short enough to follow. 82 NBA games are a waste of time, that's why I also feel college basketball is more fun than the NBA. And I'm not even going to touch the corrupted baseball league we have. MLB needs some serious help. But as far as football goes, lets get rid of preseason games that don't amount to anything. Because THAT'S where you get your injuries at. 18 games is still short enough for everyone to care about every play.

Sorry to you undrafted free agents, I know those last 2 games in August mean the world to you, but perhaps the NFL would consider you guys and expand the roster just a bit.

I'm all about more meaningful football. Injuries happen in practice, injuries happen in offseason workouts, and injuries happen in preseason games. If I were a player, I would be against more games, but as a fan, I want more. Players will be compensated, and rosters will be expanded to help teams function better. It will actually increase the number of players in the NFL, because teams will have to be better prepared with depth.

TJ, you make a decent point about the potential increase in meaningless games, but I don't think that would effect that many teams. The last game of the season probably would be meaningless for about half of the teams, but there are still always good playoff races to follow, and half of those games are meaningless now. I don't really see many situations where a top team has more than a two game lead on everyone else, it's just too hard to do. The rest of the teams still fight for seeding, and to keep their playoff spot.

More real football is better. That's all I've got. Labor Day to Valentine's Day is just not enough, push it out one end or the other.

big question becomes where do the two games come from?

the schedule is so balanced right now. The alignments are good. Everything is just so square. The way the schedule rotates is just perfect the way it is. I'm not saying I'm against it, but I'm not convinced messing with it would make it better. I do hate spending a bunch of money on preseason tickets though.

i voted all for it on two conditions.

    1. lose 2 preseason games
    2. expand rosters to 60 and not de-activate
