He was very good at what he did. There are certainly aspects of skill involved.

Once again, Gloat is mocking something and claiming that he could do it as well as anyone, but it's yet again another item on the list of things that he doesn't actually do well enough to get paid for it.

I'm not sure anyone is trying to put Mays career on a par with Jackson. Obviously that is ridiculous to do so. Of course it is about as ridiculous to say Mays was nothing and that anyone could do what he did. Mays lived in the million dollar house because he was good at what he did. Better than others. No different than a ball player or a good attorney living in a million dollar house. Unless of course you watch a MLB player and think you could do that as well.

Also it is obvious that the loss of Jackson from a cultural and musical perspective was bigger than the loss of Mays to his part of the world (although Jackson hadn't done much for quite some time). Mays will easily be replaced but Jackson won't.

Still, all that is irrevelant. The real question is will message board across the land be talking about it when Gloat or Soxcat die? I doubt it.

Someone admitting they took classes on how to sell things on TV might just be the most sad thing I've ever heard.

Do they actually have auditions for this junk? Trust me, if I can get rave reviews for playing parts in theater- I can yell about a lame product.
Billy Mays was a joke at his job. No one took the guy seriously, so saying he was good at what he did is a bit of a stretch. He was just another ridiculous pitchman. No one believed him when he said the product was great, because he seemed so fake.

Unless cheesy/obnoxious is incredibly skilled... c'mon now...

Billy Mays was irritating to me, as soon as I heard his screaming voice I immediatly started grabbing for the remote to change the channel. His over-dyed beard and loud voice was a gimmick, no skills involved.
Now, Ron PoPeil was a talented salesman...

if you watched pitchmen on the discovery channel you would have grown to like Billy Mays. he was just a average guy who got a lucky break. he seemed real nice behind the scenes and stuff. sad part is he has a 3 year old daughter that will never remember him.

Hey it was a requirement for my degree. Based on your immature attitude towards selling products not only do I promise you that you COULDN'T do it but nobody would ever give you a chance because you have no knowledge or qualifications on the subject. You're always pretending you could be a GM in every sport and now a TV pitchmen is the saddest thing I've ever seen, but hey I'll leave you to your delusions.

I disagree. Selling products is a unique skill and Mays was perfect at it. If you don't respect the skill it takes to sell something fine but for those of us that do recognize that Mays was to selling product as Jackson was to music.

Please tell us- What skills did Billy Mays possess?

    1. He wasn't at all convincing.
    2. He didn't come up with any catchy slogans. The closest thing he had was "billy mays, here!"
    3. He was nothing but lucky. Any of us could do exactly what he did if given the opportunity. Again, people have to be a certain amount of stupid to buy the products he sold anyway. They're the same people buying books from terrible fake interview pitchmen.

The only people that think this took any skill are people that are thinking WAY too deep about it. The guy was a USED CAR SALESMAN selling oxy clean. End of story.
Oh, but let me guess- used car salesmen are sooo incredibly talented too, right?

In your opinion which is very meaningless on this subject.

Does he need a catchy slogan? He's selling products that already have slogans.

Yep you're right anyone can do what he did and become millionaires. It's not hard at all and gloat knows exactly what he's talking about. Never mind the fact that gloat himself doesn't do it even though it's something "any of us could do." Yes he was lucky. Started off selling stuff on the Atlantic City boardwalk then went to having a TV show... PURE LUCK. Companies hire him to sell products which they have invested millions in, but they could just hire anyone right? Since we can all do it. Discovery Channel gave him a TV show but they could have given it to anyone since anyone can do it right? Companies who pay him to sell products that they invest money in and Discovery Channel are just run by idiots, why pay him when ANYONE can do it right? I'm glad someone called "gloat" is here to tell everyone how easy everything is. Because surely who better to inform EVERYONE on an entire industry and question CEO's of companies than someone who has no knowledge on the subject at all? In fact gloat, you've convinced me that with just a little bit of luck and the ability to yell about a product that I can make a million dollars.

I know plenty of musicians that anyone could out-do that are millionaires too.

Why is that always the justification these days? Money. Talentless people seem to be the ones that make the most in America anyway. The guy was a used car salesman. He just got lucky.

Please stop ignoring that, because everyone thinks it when they see him. Used car salesman. You can find 100 Billy Mays in nashville walking around in cheap mismatching suits.

"what can Billy Mays do to get you home in that 1997 grand am??"

Well there's one difference here: People at car dealerships are already looking for a car, it's not hard to sell them a car when they want one. Billy makes you want stuff you didn't know you wanted or needed. Now quiet.
