The Matrix as a stand alone movie was very good, and intellectually interesting, though not a new idea, just a new application in a movie. As a trilogy, it was absolutely terrible. I was really disappointed in the last two, they just kept adding eye candy and taking out logic, plot, and character.

If you just see the first one, and think it ends there, it's a pretty good and interesting movie.

I wanted to High-Five you... but couldn't. So, instead I'll just quote you and nod in agreement with you.

The Matrix... leave it as an open-ended movie! :thumb:

Did I say complex? "Getting" a certain type of comedy - or what makes them laugh is not a comment about complexity. I bet you hated The Three Stooges and probably hate everything from the B/W era..
Why don't you list 10 or 12 of your favorites Gloat?

He's a good actor.Let's face it there are not many great scripts today that encourage actors to get out of their comfort zones.

Seriously,I hated Titanic so much that I boycotted DiCaprio's movies until 'The Departed'.

I grew up with a handicapped brother and in What's Eating Gilbert Grape DiCaprio played a character very similar to my brother. His acting was stunning in that role.He must have invested a lot of time and effort studying handicapped people to get the character as perfect as he did.

The Matrix was visually stunning and with bullet time camera work it gave us a cool look that we'd never seen before. It was a fun ride and there was a huge buzz worldwide about the sequels.

Sadly though both sequels were very poorly written. They were shockingly bad. I still love the first one though.

I've listed my favorites before here, but I'll do it again. T3S was ok for it's time, just as Abbot and Costello were. Napoleon Dynamite you had to be 14 years old to find funny, or just completely square. You'll never find anyone funny in life that enjoyed that movie.

City of God, Meet Joe Black, Primal Fear, Crash, Se7en, The Departed, Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Into The Wild, American History X, 300 (for the visuals), Dead Poets Society, A Beautiful Mind, Gone Baby Gone, Lucky Number Slevin, Hot Rod, The Ex, Office Space, The Fountain (soundtrack, visuals), Finding Forrester, Good Will Hunting, The Boondock Saints, Snatch, Cinderella Man, Superbad, Gangs of New York, Love and Basketball, It's a Wonderful Life, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Illusionist, The Manchurian Candidate, V For Vendetta, Slumdog Millionaire, Zoolander, The Green Mile, Life of David Gale, Pursuit of Happyness, etc.

I like good stories. Some pretty pictures. Just a solid storyline with good acting, and execution. Not abstract plots that only try to be complicating to be artistic.

A random smattering of good, average and not good with mostly one thing in common - being made in the last 10-15 years. I'm guessing in Gloat rationale that that's when they finally starting making good movies?

I must say that Gloat's list is pretty solid. American History X, Se7en, Fight Club Crash, Good Will Hunting, The Departed, and The Shawshank Redemption are amazing movies.

    Nothing average about them.

Not like those aren't on everyone's top 50.
I will say though that Crash and The Departed make my "overrated" list..
Gimme Magnolia and State of Grace over their respective clone..

Not many people I know like the movies. Sure, they're popular, but that's not why I like them. I hate the popular/mainstream fanbase.

Magnolia is the overrated movie! Gimme American Beauty!
