I have a 1988 Schechter PT, which is a telecaster copy, made somewhat famous by Pete Townshend of The Who in the 80s. It has one tone and one volume, but surprise, it's got coil-tapping.

Surprisingly, the sustain on this guitar is unreal, and the stock parts, etc, are really solid.

Anyway, I had been looking at upgrading the p'ups, and I decided to go with the Seymour Duncan P-rails. I got a neck and bridge set, and let me tell you, if you've ever considered them, these things are amazing.

My guitar was already versatile, but basically now, it's unstoppable. I got it as a backup to my Fender American Telecaster, but it's a different animal altogether now. Two knobs, and I basically get 12 different sounds. It's ridiculous. I'll take some pictures and post them later, but thought I'd say to any guitarist needing a "p'upgrade" (I just coined that, I think) -- if these fit your sound at all (humbucker and single coil together, for both the neck and bridge), you'll want to consider these. Got 'em both for about $160 at Guitar Center.

    Well well worth it.

I put Hot Rails in my Strat
unreal tone and sustain, and I can get some down right nasty distortion
a buddy slapped some Screamin Demons in a Jackson, and I like the single-coil rails much better

these pickups are 15 years old now, not sure if SD still calls them these names, but if I ever get another Strat, first thing I'm doin' is slapping a Hot Rail in the bridge slot

I prefer my p'ups to be of the not-hot variety.. Over the years I've just about tried em all and I consistently go back to the Duncan "Seth Lover" humbuckers.. I have a few P-90 guitars (including a 1960 LP JR with original dog ears) that have a great plinky sound that I like alot and a big Gretsch with TV Jones PU's that is the f'n bomb for recording..

I like my guitars hot and screamin ... much like my women :wink2:
I don't play as much as I used to, but when I do, I try my hardest to raise the spirit of Randy Rhoads and Cliff Burton

The hotter the PU the less you hear of your guitar.
Randy Rhoads sounded great despite his gear. His playing transcended the fact that he used those ugly ugly ugly sounding Duncan Distortion humbuckers and a scratchy MXR Distortion stomp..

Hot rails in a strat...I'll have to remember that.

I don't own a strat, but I'll have one eventually. Used to have a LP Studio I played in college.

Only other electric I have now is an Epiphone Wildkat (translucent purple). P-90s and a Bigsby tremolo. It's nice to have when I need bell-like tones, or just want to play sweetly. On the flip side, thick chunky tones (I have 12s on it right now) and feedback on-demand.

    i agree with that
I heard I Don't Know and Over the Mountain the other day on the radio
I think he might also have been using a Wah-Wah

my setup sounds entirely different fwiw, I just 'play' like Rhoads
my (tone) sounds more like Dimebag Darrell

I wonder if it's a bad omen that I sound like guitarists no longer with us

I used to be a big fan of super hot p'ups, and still like the sound, but I noticed that my playing style just won't work with it.... lots of noise between every note, and I don't strum; I beat the guitar to death with my strumming hand. Superdistortion totally changes my attack, and I'm not comfy with it for very long.

    hot pickups = longer sustain
you can always trim back your distortion

    Tone>PU related sustain...
If you have a good "alive" rig you won't need to sacrifice sweeter sounding PUs for sustain. Plus nuthin sounds worse than hot PUs in clean mode anyway.
