  1. It doesn't take remotely a week now. You can buy an HD movie (granted, not blu ray quality HD) from iTunes and start playing it very quickly because you don't have to wait for it to finish.

I know that Australian internet speeds and bandwidth caps suck, but in lots of other places the speed is easily enough to download a movie and watch it almost instantly. I don't know how big the movies are from Apple, but most standard movies can be compressed from a DVD and be downloaded as a roughly 700MB file. a blu ray movie is more like 5GB, but that's still not too bad for current broadband speeds. I can download that sooner than I can get a movie from Netflix.

I also don't think Warner Bros, Paramount et al would be backing a format if they knew it would go the way of digital downloads sooner rather than later.

  3. They back enough stinkers in the theaters that I'm not sure why you'd assume that...

Yes but the difference is that with theatres success is based on whether people like it or not which can't really be found out until after the fact but with Blu-Ray and Digital Downloads they have a choice to back one or the other for the future.

All the companies are currently behind blu-ray and releasing movies on the format, if they knew digital downloads were the future why didn't they just stick with DVDs for the moment?

  6. They want to make more money now, too. After all, blu ray discs cost more...

I don't think they would be making more. The cost of putting movie/extras on Blu-ray would be more than DVD and the sales wouldn't be as good. And I am not sure if and how much they pay to use the Blu-Ray disk (such as in video games where Sony charge $3 to use a disk, Nintendo and MS charge $10 per disc).

I wouldn't read into the opinions of Don Reisinger, he's had it in for Blu-Ray since it was released.
