I can download a movie faster than I can go to a store and buy one. Before long, it'll take no time to DL a movie.
    It's inevitable.

Again, I remember when people said CDs would last because people would want the physical object. The future is clean, and nobody wants a DVD shelf cluttering their room if they don't have to have one.

Gloat, you make the transition sound like it's going to happen in a couple of years when it's at least 10 years off.

  3. The print media is absolutely in danger. Not so much books, but newspapers and some magazines are in dire straights. They are entirely dependent on advertising to make money. Craigslist has stolen tons of the classified ads from newspapers (a big revenue source). And lots of advertisers are buying internet ads instead of ads in print.

The newspaper industry is the worst hit. Computer magazines are also in bad shape because their average readers prefer to read online rather than wait a month to get the same news. I expect news magazines have also also been hurt, though not as badly.

  4. Depends on how much of the market you're talking about. Most people won't be downloading movies in 5 years, but I think a good chunk of people will.

The point is that Gloat is talking about the majority of the market. Thing is a huge portion of the market is catered to very well by Netflix, Redbox, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery and that won't change especially among the working lower middle class that doesn't bother with broadband. He sounds like Bill Gates in The Road Ahead over there. A lot of what he says is true but >60% I would imagine would have no use for downloading when they are perfectly fine with discs as they are.

If a source could set up a program where a computer logs onto their site at a specific time to download a movie or show when it isn't being used by the owner, then it takes the time factor out of the mix.

I don't know if such technology exists but the nice thing is that there will be more ways to obtain movies. Netflix has killed many video store but some still like to go to Blockbuster.

    More options = cheaper options.

The call me delusional. Include all the local printers in that as well.

Will print go away? Nope. Technology allows for cheaper printing. I venture to guess there are more magazines now than ever. The difference is they are more specified and the print runs are much less. The profit margin is reduced as a result.

I have a few clients who used to print and mail newsletter who not opt for online versions. That gives their customers options but also increases the per piece cost of each printed newsletter. At some point, it'll end up making the printed version too expensive to produce.

Newspapers depend on large print runs. That's one of the major reasons they have been hurting to most.

Well I was saved by it promptly getting back on topic.

I'm going to assume most here don't have blu ray players.
