I'm especially drawn to Stanley Kubrick. His vision overwhelmes me. Clockwork Orange, The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey...Then you have to love hitch****. Rear Window is a MASTERPIECE, along with Psycho, Rope, Vergo, North By Northwest, Rebecca, etc...

Impossible question to answer. You could argue that in a time when most movies are essentially extended music videos that someone like McG or Spike Jonze should qualify here. Big named directors of recent times like Scorsese, Spielberg, Cameron etc wouldn't be who they are if it weren't for guys like DeMille, Fellini, Huston, Ford etc. and those guys were influenced by names like Murnau, Mamoulian or even Thomas Edison before them.
So I'm going with my favorite influential directors..

    FW Murnau
    Sergio Leone
    Hitchco-ck
    Mario Bava
    James Whale
    Terrence Fisher

Impossibly tough question. Initially one is always tempted to go with an early filmmaker such as John Ford, DW Griffith, Fritz Lang or Murnau. Those guys were so damn influential on seemingly everyone who came after them their place in history is undeniable. Certainly Hitch, Akira Kurasawa and Billy Wilder's names are hard not to mention... in fact I'm still not sure that Wilder isn't the right answer (at least for me).

But if judging a director solely on how high he reached when he was at the pinnacle of his abilities, I have a hard time getting past David Lean. Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Ryan's Daughter are unbelievably brilliant films. The more you watch them and the more you get to know about the craft of motion picture making, the more spectacular they become.
