The Colts expect Peyton Manning to return in four to six weeks.

Indianapolis fans already knew the start of training camp at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., would lack significant star power with defensive end Dwight Freeney (foot) and receiver Marvin Harrison (knee) recovering from significant injuries. Coach Tony Dungy recently said the two wouldn't be full speed until at least halfway into the preseason, though the team expects them to be ready for the regular season. Safety Bob Sanders (shoulder) is also coming back from an injury.

And now quarterback Peyton Manning will be out the next four to six weeks as he recovers from a procedure that removed an infected bursa sac from his left knee. Even if everyone is back in action on schedule, that's four of the team's five best players and roughly 37 percent of the team's 2008 salary cap commitment.

Players report to camp on Thursday, July 24 and the team practices the next day. That's still six weeks and two days from the regular season opener Sept. 7 against Chicago -- plenty of time for plenty of healing. After playing so much of last season without the services of Freeney and Harrison -- and the new Manning development -- the Colts may well be due for better injury mojo this fall.

Manning has knee surgery, out 6 weeks

my thoughts are that if he's out a few games or tries the knee too soon and sets himself back mybe the Colts drop a couple that turn out to be real big come December.

This isn't a huge deal but it puts thier entire offense behind as far as preparation is concerned. Remember how poor thier d was w/o Freeney-Sanders... :hmm:

This is good news for Jags/Titans fans for sure.

If I remember correctly, this sounds a lot like the injury that Marvin Harrison had last year. That injury lingered for a LONG time (in fact, he may not even be fully recovered yet). I'm not saying it will be the same for Manning, but it would be nice if it was...

I feel like we turned the corner on Manning and the Colts anyway. We should have won the first game. So we played even with 'em. And in the second game, we outplayed their starters. I feel like if he is at full strength, the Colts are within our grasp now. They probably still have a little edge, but the games are always going to come down to a final drive for once and that is a big step for us. We aren't teetering on blow outs anymore.

Playing QB really helps. A little soreness and stiffness in the knee shouldn't effect his performance like it would a RB or WR. I doubt it is an issue.

This is exactly the injury Manning had his senior year at UT. He will be back by opening day.
