A real RB vs a utility guy.

A proven workhorse vs a question mark.

A guy who runs fast vs an nfl player.

Rice is hardly slow. He had the 5th best 40 time, 4th best shuttle and best cone times among backs. His cone time was 2nd best in the whole combine He is a 200lb guy who runs hard like a 215 lb guy and who makes sharp tight moves ideal for the nfl. If he was 5'11 220 lbs he would have been the 2nd back taken. It's guys like rice who succeed in the nfl not guys like johnson. :suspect:

Good idea. Sit around and think about all the reasons to be pissed off that we drafted CJ. Ignore the fact we DID draft CJ and HE IS a Titan.

Tide! When the Titans begin the season they will have a kid named Chris Johnson wearing number 29 on the field. Rice will not be out there. Accept it!

Open the blinds. Let a little light into the room. Take the medication.

Chris henry best back in the league 2008!

He is on our team, we drafted him. Why didn't MR and fisher just accept that he is #42 on our team and give him a chance? Chris henry IS A TITAN!

Why are you guys so dark on poor chris h?

I have less of a problem being critical of Chris Henry than I do CJ simply because we have more info on Henry after one year. Right now we don't know if CJ was a good pick or not. Assuming he is dog do do is what makes no sense. Heck, Chris Henry might end up being a real solid pick a few years from now.

What constitutes a quality pass receiving back?

What if prima donna catches 39 passes this year and 35%(13) go for first downs? Proof that he was a good pick? Last year brown and white did that.

I studied the RB receiving stats from 2007. 20 backs caught 35 balls or more it is hardly uncommon.

Among the 20 backs with 35 or more pass receptions these are the median stats. Note median not average. To much disparity to average everybody.

    Catches 44

    Yards per catch 7.9

    FD% 35%

44 catches would have put you tied for 10th among all RBs. A 7.9 ypc would make you 10th best among the top 20 and 35% FD ratio would put you 10th best among the top 20 RBs.

If a back can do that every year he is a quality pass receiver.

By comparison reggie bush who has averaged 80 catches among the best has averaged a bit less per catch and a bit less in FD %.

Blazing speed doesn't always translate into a high ypc either. Leon washington is fast enough to return 3 kicks for TDs but only averaged 5.9 yards a catch.

Want a mind blowing number? Adrian peterson caught 51 passes. 74%(37) went for a first down. Now that is effectiveness.

A few things to consider when evaluating our stud rookie this year.

You make a good point but I think if Henry becomes a solid player he'll be on another team.

That's nice and dandy. Great for Rice. He has some potential.
But the Titans needed a deep threat, a home run hitter. I don't believe that's Ray Rice. CJ provides the Titans with a home run hitting RB (need), depth at RB (need), depth at WR (need), playmaker (need), and speed (need)
Rice just provides us with depth at RB and speed (need).
On draft day, there was no guarentee that Rice was going to be there.

Chris Johnson= RB, WR, PR, KR, speed, playmaking, offensive complement, splits carries
    Ray Rice= RB, backup
