The award is presented by Hawaiian Airlines, and local news channels spend most of their sports coverage looking at plays made by local people in national games. Mariota takes up a bit of coverage, and got the Titans on almost weekly broadcast. in a related story, boy do I know waaaay more than I ever wanted to about Shane Victorino.
Hawaii is not "Polynesia" ("Many Islands"). Polynesia is mostly the southern Pacific Ring of Fire islands, from which the Hawaiian natives came. Getting off the island and noticed nationally is a really big deal to them because it's INCREDIBLY difficult to do. Being so remote is EXPENSIVE.
