It wasn't really a "must win" though. Even with the loss, either Ghana or Portugal (especially Portugal), was going to have not only win, but win by multiple goals, or the US was going to have to lose by multiple goals, to by pass the US team. Of course it would have been nice to win or at least draw, but the odds of the US advancing going into todays games were pretty high, no matter the outcome of their game.

And I am confident going forward? Of course not. I think the next game is probably a toss up, and I do think they can advance to a degree, but I don't think anyone expects the US to win the entire thing, though it would certainly be awesome if they did.

Agreed. If you get 4 points in group play, the odds are you are advancing. All but 2 teams that had 4 or more points advanced, and one of those that didn't was Portugal, who had a 4 goal loss, which is extremely difficult to recover from unless you have 2 wins. The bottom line, is that the US played in a very tough group, and did enough to advance. I am perfectly happy with that.

So is the country embracing soccer more or is it a once every two year blip?

I'm without a doubt a guy that only pays attention when the national team(men and women) is playing. I couldn't care less about following an MLS team or a Premier League club. I have never heard anyone in my age group(I'm 26) say they follow either of those leagues or any of the other major leagues/clubs in the world.

Does this craze end in a month? I say yes. I think this whole thing is about people just saying "America! **** yeah!" on Facebook and whatnot.

I'd say yes and no... what you said is true, but the popularity is on the rise.

More and more kids are playing and the accessibility to seeing soccer is high.

It'll fade, but soccer is definitely gaining popularity here.

In order to keep this type of buzz, Americans would need an international superstar.

If we produced a star on the world stage- the fire would stay lit.

America cares about individual superstars or else the sport doesn't do much for us.

Basketball- faded when Jordan left. Sparked back with Kobe... now with Lebron.

Baseball - No one cares. There's no face anymore... no KGj's, Sosa's, Bonds, Hank, etc...

Golf - No one cared 'til Tiger.

Hockey - No one cares. No Gretskies.

Tennis - No Andre's... no one cares. Womens has a following only because of Serena.

    on and on...

When our best national player is Clint Dempsey... no one is going to care. He's as boring as they get.

The "craze" will end in a month, but there is still a growing fan base. Premier league games are now shown on major networks over here, some cities, especially Seattle, love their MLS team, and the fact it is still a popular sport with regards to youth leagues are all signs that it is a growing sport and there is growing interest over here. It obviously won't be anywhere close to the NFL or major college sports or what not, but I do think interest is growing.

Which is going to happen sooner rather than later. The US probably does have a higher concentration of great athletes than anywhere in the world, they have just always leaned towards football or basketball before. But, with all of the health issues associated with football coming to light, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see guys veer towards soccer instead.

Yep. I know a lot of "mentors" and coaches influencing their best athletes to play baseball and soccer instead of football and basketball now.

Outside of injuries- just because it's a smarter move. Good chance to go pro if you're a top athlete and opt out of the major concentrated sports.
