I think there are 3 things that separate scouts from your average football fan. First it's their access to footage we'll never see. The best we get of youtube clips of a prospect, scouts have access to that infamous all-22 film and in many cases know exactly what assignment a guy followed or blew because they can use the coach as a resource.

The second is they have the ability so see these guys up close, live and usually even meet them. Tape is an amazing tool but as anyone who's ever played any sport knows, watching a guy live can tell you much more than tape.

The third is time spent doing the job. Even if these guys weren't "born to be scouts" the sheer amount of time doing the work must make them better at it than the average fan. We look at these guys for a few weeks maybe months before the draft, scouts do this 24/7 365. It's really no contest. I think there are also many things we don't even know about that help scouts do their jobs.

Actually there are zero starting LTs in the NFL right now which were drafted in Rd 7.

Becoming a scout is easy guys, but its a lousy job unless you eat sleep breath football, also the traveling and living out of a suitcase kinda sucks.

Still don't understand how people don't like this pick. The other scenario is what? We draft Donald or Mosley? We win one more game, maybe, with that person and then Roos is gone after the season. Oher plays mediocre and we don't have a LT. The second most important position on offense. Next season we NEED a LT so we draft a first round LT or pay a lot of money for one. Chances we draft one as good as Lewan is slim since we will be picking 15-22 next year. This pick doesn't help a lot this year, it might if someone gets hurt or plays bad, but saves us a lot next year. There was no player or trade available better than Lewan. We have a LT for the next decade, a lot of teams cant say that.

I think the stuff that the average fan can't get makes the job a bit harder.

Interviews and background galore. Sometimes you fall in love with how the guy was in the interview process. It's just a lot of extra stuff to muddy the waters.

But yes I do agree with your premise.

    Right.

Which comes with the job. It really is all connections, as many job positions are. Definitely a "who you know" job.

Will agree that being a professional does not make you better at your job. I would venture to say the majority of guys that work on cars in their past time know as much or more than the guy at Midas.
