I liked Rob, back when he was hitting 60 yard game-winning FGs. But he has been very inconsistent as of late. I'm not mad at this move, at all.

Its actually very smart to keep a decent amount of cap space. First Rookies will cost around 7 million. Also, after this season, we will have a better understanding of what this team needs under Whiz, so that money will go toward what we can spend next year.

Spending money for the sake of spending money gets you into bad contracts which is how bad teams stay bad

I'd rather pay CJ 20 million for one year, than cut him and enter the season with 20 million in cap space. An Owner may not agree with that because of his own greedy reasoning, but having that 20 million won't help the football team in any way. CJ would in some regard, even if it's a few touches a game.

Player salaries count for a pretty small percentage of a franchises overall spending (like 30% or something). If we enter a season with a ton of cap space, that's just wasted space that we could have used to sign a good player or two. You can always cut players later if they don't work out. I want to see us be around the cap limit every year.

I actually agree with this thinking too. It makes no sense to cut these guys if we're just gonna sit on the money.

Cut him now. Get the dead cap money over with now rather than wait until next year.

Okay, so we cut him. What do we do with that 6 million in cap space we save? Spend it on more recycled bums like Antonio Johnson and Fokou? The time has about come and gone for getting good players in free agency. If we're not going to spend the money we save by cutting CJ wisely, I'd rather just overpay his bum ass. Better than sitting on money and doing nothing with it.

Or june-1st him and float the balance over 2 years like we're doing

We can still use our money for good instead of taking the hit this year

You can turn signing bonus into roster bonus and save on future salary cap

You want to June first cut him? And then pay for him over two years like we are doing with Amano.
