This is a time of year that can be worrisome for veterans, as teams in need of money under the salary cap – or teams simply looking to reshape their roster – often jettison an experienced player or two.

Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick knows the scenario all too well, as Buffalo cut him last March, a day before he was due a $3 million bonus. Fitzpatrick was in the midst of a six-year, $59 million contract that would have paid him $7.45 million base salary in 2013.

Fitzpatrick isn’t making that kind of money now. He’s scheduled to make $2.75 million in base salary in 2014, along with a $500,000 roster bonus. But if the Titans found themselves in need of extra cash – or if they simply decided Fitzpatrick wasn’t part of the future – the team could save $3.25 million in cap money.

The 31 year-old Fitzpatrick said Tuesday he doesn’t spend time fretting over the possibilities.

“I’ve learned not to worry about any of that stuff,” Fitzpatrick said while attending a team-sponsored event for season ticket-holders.

“It’s one of those things that if you spend so much time worrying about it … It’s either going to happen or it’s not. There’s no reason to fret about it before anything happens. It’s obviously something that, as you get older, you get better perspective and maybe better insight as to how the deal works. But I don’t concern myself about that.”

Fitzpatrick had his ups and downs last season while playing 11 games – starting nine – for the Titans. He completed 62 percent of his passes, threw for 14 touchdowns versus 12 interceptions, and posted a quarterback rating of 82.0. The Harvard graduate also ran for 225 yards and three touchdowns, but fumbled nine times – losing two.

Assuming he returns next season, Fitzpatrick will be working under a new head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, who replaced Mike Munchak. But Fitzpatrick, who’s played for four teams in his nine-year career, has plenty of experience transitioning to new coaches. He had three head coaches – Dick Jauron, Perry Fewell (interim) and Chan Gailey – during four years in Buffalo alone.

“If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s adjusting to new staffs — from being on four different teams and going through a lot of different coaches,” Fitzpatrick said. “They did me a favor (here) by bringing in some (former Buffalo assistants), so that was good … guys I’m familiar with. So the more you stick around, the more familiar the faces start to look.”

He’s looking forward to the changes that come with any new staff.

“For me, it’s always fun because it’s new and fresh,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s not the same ol’ from the year before, the same offense and the same learning. You get to dive into a different system and really share some ideas and bounce them off the walls. It will be fun.”

The Titans could save $3.25 million in cap money by releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick.
We'd consider it a remote possibility. The Titans aren't in a desperate cap situation, Jake Locker is coming off Lisfranc surgery and Fitzpatrick is a plus backup. He started nine games last year, going 3-6 with a 62.0 completion percentage and 14:12 TD-to-INT ratio.

poor guy. he is only a multimillionaire, and he made more last year than I may make in a lifetime. Totally sucks to be him. He should totally be worried about the future.

Matt Cassel would be better because he isn't named Fitzpatrick. No upgrade at all, but it would make me feel better.

Just cut the fella. I didn't have any confidence in any of his throws past 10 yards. That is just one awful feeling to have in your own QB.

Yeah, but we won't have the fan base split on QBs because a couple of ignoramuses thinking he'll turn into a franchise player. I swear that's where half of the Fitzpatrick hate comes from.
