Ra'Shede Hageman and other 3-4 end prospects..

    Watch the Bama vs ND title game for great line play. Notre dame's front 3 was Tuitt, Nix and Lewis-Moore. Teo a 2nd rd pick at ILB and the Bama line handled them almost easy.

    Tuitt was handled by Fluker that game.

    Lewis-Moore might have been as high as a 2nd rd pick last year but he hurt his knee at the end of the half and the Ravens took a chance on him in the 6th rd and had him on injured reserve last season. Nix and Tuitt should both be 1st rd picks.

    Watching the game i'm more than convinced that Chance will be a pro bowl player he handles high quality players every down.

    I am partial to Hagemen cause I think he is slightly more athletic than Tuitt but I would be more than happy with either. It is a good year to need defense line help cause this draft is pretty deep. Brent Urban is a guy to watch in the mid rounds from Virginia. Brett Keisel clone.

    I like Hageman, but will be interested to see what our line up looks like 3-4 wise. If we plan on Casey and Ropati playing ends then pass on these guys and get a Barr or Mack, if we plan on Casey playing inside I'm all for Hageman.

    Hageman is a solid pick no question. I like his skills and athleticism, and I think Horton could develop him well at the next level. I really hope we get a difference maker this go around.

    Watching Alabama play the last 2 years they used a 4 man front at least 1/3 of the time in base defense situations. Especially against good running teams like LSU and Auburn. That's a traditional 3-4 team. And in nickel and dime situations they used the 4-2-5 and the 4-1-6 85% of the time. So honestly they probably didn't line up in a traditional 3-4 look more than 40% of the time.

    So why draft D-linemen primarily for a 3 man look? A guy like Hageman would play more downs as a DT in a 4 man front than as a 3-4 end. That means Hageman and Casey as your 2 inside guys in 4 man fronts. How do you block them both? That's where the benefit occurs. To have not just one but 2 guys who can penetrate and rush the passer from the inside. No center can block those guys without help.

    So yeah we can resign Ropati and Mookie and be covered with 300 lb guys in any look along with Casey, Hill and Martin. But the idea is to get a dominant guy inside, another stud and there is incredible value with guys like Hageman, Tuitt and Jernigan all potentially available when we pick. And that's the order i would rate them but they are all credible guys to consider with that pick.

    You can also add Nix to that list but i want a pass rusher a guy who can be a real force.

    I don't know to be honest, I have never seen him play the end, but dude is relentless despite the physical question marks.

    thats the one reason i asked, because his motor i think he could be alright there even if he is not the ideal physical specimen. imagine if we could trade back and get another 2nd or a 3rd while still being able to pick up a defensive playmaker and then darnold in the second

    That would be awesome man. No question that we need depth. I REALLY want an extra pick...we need that 3rd back or better.

    Mayock said Minnesota defensive lineman Ra'Shede Hageman looks like a first-round pick in some games, and in others "he disappears for three quarters" and looks like a fifth- or sixth-round pick. Mayock said a good evaluation of Hageman must properly balance both the best and worst of his body of work.

    High on Mack

    The best edge pass rusher in the draft after Jadeveon Clowney? Don't think defensive end, Mayock says. Think linebacker. Think Buffalo's Khalil Mack. "You can line up on a tight end and he'd be OK. I think the important thing is that if you're drafting him as a 4-3 team, that in nickel and sub situations, you're freeing him up to go get the quarterback. ... I think after Clowney, I think he's the most gifted edge guy in the class," Mayock said.
