He's unemployed, so he might be willing to take a job in December rather than wait for the unknown.

He has had success and will probably land a job somewhere this offseason.

    From his wikipedia entry
The Bears started the 2012 season on a promising note with a 7-1 record. The team's defense ranked first in takeaways, third in points allowed, and fifth in yard allowed. However, the team lost five of their next eight games. The Bears finished the season with a 10-6 record, but missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six years. On December 31, 2012 Smith was fired as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Smith departed the Bears with nine years of service, three playoff appearances, one Coach of the Year award, and one Super Bowl appearance

While an actual December hire is unlikely, the good thing about going ahead and firing your scrub HC as soon as possible is it gives you extra time to discuss/negotiate with potential HC candidates. Find out what they're looking for and what's most important to them. Prepare the best pitch/offer possible. Schmooze them. Etc.

I think the more time you have the more of an advantage you are at, generally speaking.

He leads the list of minority HC candidates, he'll get to interview with any team searching for a HC.

Houston is a good job to take over, so he may do just that, but I'd predict he wont sign til early January when he has all his options laid out for him.

Smith had one of the finest linebackers in nfl history on his team the entire time. Devin hester was a force back when kick returners were a thing. Sometimes you have to be able to separate the team from the coach. and think what that coach could do with our current crop of players.

Would by no means oppose him coming. Cannot hurt, but I won't expect anything magical from the signing.

Gross man played his only decent year of NFL football, and the team still didnt show up at all in that Super Bowl. Besides the Hester return, the game was handed to the colts on a platter. Manning was below average that game, even.

If that is a coach's highlight (8 years ago) then that is a very fisheresque reason to want him. Fisher's Super Bowl team at least showed up.
