As soon as I saw Turner play, I knew we'd made a mistake in releasing Velasco. On the other hand retaining Velasco would have meant that Schwenke doesn't get his shot or the switch happens much later in the season. As our young center of the future he needs as many snaps as possible.

We let velasco find another starting job knowing we were going younger. We did the guy a favor. Turner did show some pep early in the season but quickly faded. The coaches knew they had an ace in the hole with schwenke.

It also helps cap, plus future cap. It was the smart move. We shoulda started the rookie sooner tho.

I see your point, but after spending 100 million in FA you would think they would retain the best option. He would have been an excellent backup and mentor. What was his salary?

I think his tender was a 2nd rounder and when he signed the contract after no one traded for him it was at around 2M... again not sure, but I think that was the case...

    EDIT: Yup, check below:
    Velasco signs tender, begins workouts

By JIM WYATT, The Tennessean | Published April 22, 2013
Titans center Fernando Velasco, a restricted free agent, signed his one-year tender on Monday morning and began taking part in the team’s voluntary workout program. Velasco started all 16 games in 2012, with 13 at center and three at guard. The Titans tendered Velasco at a second-round level last month. He’s scheduled to make $2.023 […]

I too was a huge fan of Valz, I always thought he played really well for us (especially at G before they moved him to C). However, I think they questioned his ceiling and since Brian was there in the 4th, they decided to go with someone both cheaper and with more potential.

It was another astute move by Webster; i really questioned it at the time but now I see how smart it was.

Brian will play under his rookie contract for years to come (what 3 or 4) vs. had we kept Valz and had to sign him to an extension next year for $$$. Also, if you ask me, Brian's already shown how good he can be and that by week 14 or so could already be as good as Valz.

Also, the interior OL went through a makeover, so it made sense to get a new good/young C who can stay with us and grow/mesh with the rest of the iOL.

No question that Schwenke was the future back in the offseason, but we let Velasco go at the end of camp when Schwenke was already injured. The move wasn't that astute because we swapped Turner for Velasco in order to save a million dollars after spending 100. Just seemed like cheap savings for a lesser player in Turner.
