Safeties are too important to this defense

After watching us go back to super conservative mode yesterday with Griffin out, I realized just how important safety is to this defense. Wilson is a good strong safety and solid cover guy, but no where near as rangy as Griffin. Last season, it was strong safety we struggled with all season. My question is, why is depth so poor at free safety? If it is that important to our defense, why aren't we stockpiling safeties like we have been doing with receivers? I really feel like we got exposed yesterday. Without the usually dependable Michael Griffin (at least dependable to be on the field), our entire gameplan changes and some scrub like Clemens ends looking like he actually belongs in the NFL.

Somewhat related, wtf did we drop Casey into coverage to cover Cook? :gaah:

To me, it looks like the whole gameplan is screwed up with Griffin out. Get well soon Michael Griffin.

I wouldn't say our depth is poor... It's actually stronger than most teams.

You aren't going to be able to sign quality starters to be backups... they'll sign as starters elsewhere.

There's nothing else we can really do other than take some late round safeties in the draft, which we have attempted to do - but they always suck.

Been worried all year about Griff. Said he was the last guy we could afford to lose because he does not really have a backup.

Behind string safety, depth is good. Like Hammer said, Griffin doesn't have a backup. You would think Campbell would be better suited for this role than Wilson, but I bet he makes too many bonehead mistakes/penalties.

They tried Verner at the spot in the offseason. I think he's the primary reserve, if Griffin goes down again. And it makes sense, he's a smart kid, with a knock for getting the ball.

With the team relying on the 3 safety set so much they really should have better depth at the position.

Gregg Williams' defenses have always been reliant on safeties. That's why it was so awesome when we had Bishop and Robertson. His defenses in Buffalo had Lawyer Milloy. In DC he had Sean Taylor/LaRon Landry.

    It's just what he wants.

You know what helps back up safeties?

    A ****ING PASS RUSH.

I didn't see one god damn blitz all day yesterday, but what did I see? A ****ing DT covering a TE. Everyone got back aboard the retard bus on defense.
