Re-watched game...thoughts

Well in all honesty the play wasnt called that way. The Rams shifted to empty and for the play called that apparently required an 8th pass defender. You cant give up the edge by dropping a DE so it had to be a DT. Just an unfortunate mix of play called, personnel on the field and Rams changing formation.

 

I wasn't aware of any scenario in which it would be necessary to drop a 300 lb DT into coverage due to a formation.

 

I haven't re-watched the game, but it's Fisher. CBs were probably 10-15y off on every play. Say what you want about Fisher, but he's afraid to get beat deep. It was obvious on that short slant Wright took for a lot of yards. He was supposed to be covered by Finny, who wasn't even in on the tackle. Had too much ground to cover, before getting to Wright.

 

Maybe it is just me, but Ayers looks lost in coverage. He needs to rush the quarterback and only rush the quarterback on third down (he scares me everytime he drops back to cover someone).

Also, they need to force the players to wrap up in practice so that it becomes second nature. On Zac Stacy's 30+ yard run, three players were in position to bring him down but they didn't wrap up. Very frustrating to see this.

The screen pass should be a staple of this offense. (Funny how their pass rush slowed down, once we took advantage of this.)

ideas going forward: Run an unbalanced line, more 3 TE sets and on 3rd and 1 situations put Mike Martin as the fullback and allow him to zero in on anyone wearing a different colored jersey and tell Greene to follow him through the hole.

 

Actually he bit on the curl and wright just blew past him on the slant.

 

I swear it seemed like Gray called the first three quarters and Williams called the 4th.

 

Damn that's no lie. It's like they told Williams "get in there before Jerry blows the game".

 

I went back and watched only the offense and more specifically Warmack. He plays too high. Way too high. When the ball is snapped he's standing straight up and losing all of his leverage and power. He's great pulling and getting the free guy out of the play, but if we're going right behind him, more times than not he isn't going forward at all.

I'd like to see him play meaner too. One of the reasons I liked Cooper more.
