Smith likely to throw deep on Titans

A lot of NFL teams try to play it safe with rookie quarterbacks, but that hasn’t been the case so far with the New York Jets and Geno Smith.

Through three games, Smith is tied with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers for most completions (nine) on throws traveling 21-plus yards in the air, per ESPN. He’s also averaging 7.85 yards per pass attempt, which ranks ninth in the league.

“Just watching film, they throw the deep ball more (than last year),” Titans safety Michael Griffin said. “Geno Smith is growing in confidence with each game. He’s going to try to test us. We can’t look at him as a rookie quarterback. There’s a reason they went with him as a starter.”

Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said he’s not shocked that Smith – who piled up 331 yards through the air last Sunday — has thrown a lot of deep passes.

“You’ve got to go with what you do well,” Gray said. “I think what helped us is that last year we got a chance to go against (then-rookie Andrew Luck) and I thought he was a premium quarterback. We watched him throw deep balls … so we don’t have to be shocked (by a rookie) anymore.”
