All around the NFL, defenses are gearing up to stop elaborate aerial attacks, the kind that produced 12 300-yard passing games and 63 passing touchdowns (the most in league history) last week.

Then there are the Titans, who went Neanderthal in their season opener, pounding the Pittsburgh defensive line by running on 42 of their 62 offensive plays.

The Titans ran the ball more than any other team except fast-paced Philadelphia last week, and only five other teams besides those two ran the ball as many as 30 times.

So is it possible that the Titans – who are equipped with a powerful offensive line, three tight ends that block well, and running backs Chris Johnson, Shonn Greene (5-11, 233 pounds) and Jackie Battle (6-2, 240 pounds) – might represent a mismatch for a league that’s designed to stop the pass?

“I think defenses aren’t as used to it,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “I think defenses get more work rushing the passer. It seems like offenses are all about 300 yards passing and scoring.”

The Titans came out on top of last year’s top-ranked defense despite throwing for just 125 yards, the fourth-lowest total in the season’s first week.

“It’s a little different than what the majority of the league is doing,” Titans quarterback Jake Locker said of his team’s offensive style. “Whether it’s tougher or not (to defend), I don’t really know from a gameplan standpoint. But I do believe that (the run and pass) feed off each other, so when you’re able to do both really well, it gives (defenses) more to think about.”

It remains to be seen whether the Titans will go quite as run-heavy on Sunday in Houston, against a Texans defense that ranked seventh against the run last year.

“I just think when teams don’t work against something, and they don’t see a lot of running, they’re maybe not as good at it,” Munchak said. “We’ll see how it goes. We’ll do whatever it takes to win.

“Last week it was probably running more than we thought we would. I don’t think we thought we’d run the ball 40 times, but that’s how it worked out.”

It's unique because it's based on 1950's football, whereas virtually every other team in the NFL plays in 2013.

You cant see the advantage we have?

Very few teams practice tackling during the season, it makes sense to use that against people, doesn't it?

this was the jets recipe for success when ryan got there then he fell in love with sanchez and got away from that but I think jakes way better than mark was at that time so if our d can be top 10 we can definitely take advantage of our opponents lack of practice against a hard nose run team with the ability to run great pa pass and bootlegs

It's a throwback team. In every way. Now imagine if locker catches fire. Or... We replace his ass next year cuz he ends up sucking. We are built for the next 4-5 years on offense. Replace CJ with any other speed back. Take the next bruiser in 2015. WRs already in place. Couple changes in tackles over the next few years.

Defense is young af. Safety and DE being the biggest questions moving forward.

    We see playoffs soon

That's the perfect example. And... We have the RB they did it with in green and a faster LT

No, I really don't. Anyone who believes that this style of football offers us some sort of advantage is definitely wearing rose colored glasses.

I mean it's one thing if we were rushing for 5+ yards a carry and scoring touchdowns, then we may have a clear advantage. Hell most people on this board are talking that way, like the Pittsburgh game was some amazing rushing feat; some kind of dominant ground performance. Are you kidding me? 112 yards on 42 carries... that's 2.6666 yards per carry, that's not dominant that's pathetic. It made me sick how predictable our play calling was, but what else is new huh? I wonder if that predictable play calling contributed to our amazing 2.6 YPC, of course it did.

All that game told me is this stupid staff is afraid to let Locker throw the ball. What's worse is, and this is crystal clear to me, is that Munch and morons and Co. are afraid to show that the may have made a mistake drafting Locker.

    Worst of all though...

The Jets, Bills and Raiders have more faith in their quarterbacks than the Titans do in Locker. Geno Smith, EJ Manuel and Terell Pryor are winging the ball all over the field and competing at a pretty high level. While this team is still handling Locker with kid gloves for some unknown reason. Loggains is proving to be a horrible coordinator, just like I feared.

You don't catch fire throwing the ball 20 times a game.
