Titans coach Mike Munchak said Thursday that if his wide receiver corps is healthy – and he feels it is right now – then the team may well choose to suit up only four players at that position on Sunday against Pittsburgh.

Presumably, that would mean Michael Preston and rookie Justin Hunter – the team’s second-round draft pick – would sit against the Steelers.

In fact, Munchak said that even if the team suits up five wide receivers on Sunday, Preston might get the nod over Hunter because of Preston’s special-teams experience.

Hunter knows the Titans are deep at wide receiver, but feels he can find a way to crack the roster.

“(Wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson) has been really honest with us, and he said somebody won’t dress,” Hunter said. “So it’s depending on how I come to practice, if I play fast … That’s one of the things he tried to address this week is playing fast. He wants me to practice hard. He wants me to work hard. Nothing is going to be given to me.”

Hunter has been arriving on the practice field earlier than some of his fellow receivers this week, in order to work on individual drills by himself.

“Coach has me working on little things to make me better coming out of my break,” Hunter said. “So I’m over there doing little cone drills and ladder drills, things to help quicken my feet and help me get out of my turns a little better. He wants me to drop my body down, get low, and not play so tall all the time.”

How long will Hunter be doing those drills before practice?

“He said every day until I get sick of it,” Hunter said with a smile.

Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said other Titans pass-catchers, like wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Delanie Walker, are doing individual drills as well. Britt has been doing extra work with the JUGS machine as he looks to improve on his concentration.

“They need to make their weaknesses their strengths and improve fast, and we don’t have a lot of time because Pittsburgh is coming soon,” Loggains said. “That’s what it’s about.”

Not surpsing ... We have a very talented WR corps, and he is a rookie in a position that takes a while to adjust to. He will start cracking the line up at some point this year, but just because he isn't doing it week 1 with the guys we already have ahead of him is nothing to worry about.

    But..

Britt could go down on any play. Wright is coming off of a knee injury, probably not 100% Nate always seems to get dinged up and misses plays here and there. Oh, and we're playing a hard hitting defense.. not too sure about this one.

Meanwhile, the WR we traded up with a 3rd rounder to get isn't even good enough to dress, given the aforementioned circumstances. You're not starting off on a good note, Hunter.

It speaks more to the talent at the position than it does his talent.

I hope you're right.. but I'm not as high on the talent of our WRs as most here are.

Britt's knee is still a problem, and he's not back to 100%. Something was off about his ability to play the ball in the air during the preseason.

Nate is solid, but will never be anything too special. He's also getting a bit older.

Wright is coming along very nicely, but his knee is a bit of a setback. He had a case of the dropsies during camp and the preseason as well. And he's more of a slot WR than a full-time outside WR.

I expected Hunter to come into the season at #4, but things haven't gone the way I hoped thus far. But there's plenty of time left. No need to get too worried

I think it'd be a mistake to only dress 4 receivers against such a physical defense. But hey, what do I know. I'd also prefer to get our 34th overall pick some real deal playing time sooner rather than later. But again, what do I know.

Even in pre-season I dont remember us throwing one deep ball to Hunter. Isn't his purpose to take the top off the defense? You don't need to be a route master to do that. They need to run him long even if its just a friggin decoy, I don't understand, is his downfield blocking not up to coach Jefferson's standards? He's damn near a first round pick , wtf? I don't get it.

Right now would you trade Hunter for Mathieu ? Just asking, I'm not saying I would or wouldn't but I would consider it.

Not at all. Mathieu is a nickel corner, you can find those guys anywhere. Hell, Verner and Sensabaugh play NB very well.

The guy is raw, and I want our best players on the field. Just because he was drafted in the 2nd, doenst make him one of our top WRs and I dont want "where they were drafted in the draft" to trump whos the best players.

It takes a year or two (usually 3) to develop. Relax
