Gregg Williams can still be heard loud and clear. His voice carries across the practice field even over the banging of shoulder pads and helmets. He gets his point across.

Yet in his first six months of a second stint with the Titans, he’s managed to keep a low profile, either because team officials have muzzled the controversial coach, or because he wanted to limit his access to reporters.

Hired in February as senior assistant/defense after serving a one-year suspension for his role in the “Bountygate” scandal while with the Saints, Williams spoke to reporters on Wednesday for the first time in training camp.

Media had requested to speak to him each of the first 27 days of camp. Every other assistant had been made available, some more than once.

“It’s not that haven’t been able, maybe I don’t want to,” Williams said with a smile before pausing. “I’m just kidding, no, no, no. …

“The big thing is it’s not about me and what I want you to understand is it’s not about me, it’s about these players.”

Williams made it clear, however, his meetings with reporters this season would be rare. Saying he’s “happiest on the field,” he stressed that he’s excited to be coaching after a one-year absence, excited to help the Titans repair their broken defense.

“I enjoy every single day. I don’t take any day for granted,” he said. “When you get a chance to compete … that is what makes your job fun. I am a competition addict and I love the chance to compete.”

Williams hasn’t walked a politically correct tightrope with the Titans. He challenges his players and believes his message has been well received because of the defense’s personality.

    He’s still a demanding coach.

“The thing I won’t ever compromise on, or otherwise I’ll retire, is effort and toughness,” he said. “That is what this game is about, and players don’t want to play with someone who doesn’t get that, and coaches don’t want to coach them. That is one of the things that bothers me — if a guy is not 100 percent all the time when he plays this game, and a lack of toughness.”

I'm hoping that the year away and the punishment he got doesn't diminish the way he goes about coaching the game.I still want him to teach the players how to be aggressive and play good defense but not end up thinking twice about saying or doing certain things because of what happened in the past.He can still have that killer instinct and smash mouth mentality just like he did in the past.

I'll admit I hated considerably on Williams for bounty gate and still think some of his comments were disgusting.

But I really like the way he has handled himself keeping a low profile but staying true to his tough personality with the players. He's pretty much the only reason I think the defense could be better from last year.

I'd be perfectly happy if he installed bounty-gate here.

It's simply what any d-coordinator is saying- from Jr High and on.

Wrong. Some of it was things that coaches say all the time. However, there were the "Take out that ACL" and a couple other comments that I've never heard a coach say and should never be uttered by a coach to his players. I'm sure he won't say anything like that again though.

He was saying target the injured ACL.

Which is done. If there's a weakness, you target it on a star player.

    Not exactly shocking.

Meh...every football player I know who I've talked to about this says the same thing. It's the culture of the game, I'm over it. Glad to have something to make other teams at least consider our defense.
