When Titans middle linebacker Colin McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in Week One last season, he returned to the field before he was ready. It set the stage for turned out to be a lost season.

With that in mind, the Titans were more careful with McCarthy when he suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month in training camp.

McCarthy returned to the practice field on Thursday for the first time in three weeks. He suffered the injury on July 31, his only day to work with the first-team unit in camp. McCarthy acknowledged Thursday he returned to action too quickly a year ago.

He missed three games at the start of the 2012 season before being back in the starting lineup. Later in the season, he was sidelined with a concussion.

“(Last year) I came back from the ankle in three weeks, when high ankles take four to six,’’ McCarthy said. “They knew I wasn’t 100 percent and I didn’t feel like I should be out there but the team needed me so I was out there.

“We learned from that, the trainers, the coaches and it was their decision to hold me back as long as they did (this time), which feels good. So to have them on my side not forcing me to be out there… There is no frustration and anger, more excitement to go out there and play.”

McCarthy won’t play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Falcons. The plan is for him to return to action in the preseason finale at Minnesota on August 29.

Coach Mike Munchak said McCarthy won’t be in a position to be a starter for the regular season opener in Pittsburgh on September 8, a job that instead will go to Moise Fokou.

At this point, McCarthy said he’s just happy to be back on the field.

“Last year preseason was great for me, and then I get hurt and it was downhill,’’ McCarthy said. “I know what I can do and I think the coaches know what I can do. My teammates know what I can do and the biggest thing is being ready Week One.”

McCarthy is such a tease. He'll give you 40-50 All-Pro snaps, then he'll go and get hurt missing significant time.

If we get anything from him this season I will be surprised. How someone so injury prone can be a linebacker is beyond me.

I had this same problem playing LB, I know his pain. This is the single biggest tragedy in football, the best 53 dont always suit up. Lots and I mean lots of great players are victim of injuries, it takes a lot of luck to play all 16 games, so I'm not mad that Colin misses time, what Im mad about is he can be so good, and bad luck is controlling his destiny. Thats a real bummer.

Looks like McCarthy taking a little jab at the coaches for allowing him to return too early last year.

Only you know your body, McCarthy. You have to do what's best for yourself in the long run.

It's really hard to like this guy. I'm glad Munchak is moving on with Fokou.

If we're going to make a thread every time McCarthy comes back from injury we're going to have a lot of the same threads.

Munchy isn't moving forward with Fokou just because he named him the starter for week one. Fokou is average to below average as a starter, and we need to upgrade the position. If Crutches can't keep himself on the field this season, we'll have to address the position via free agency or the draft. (We'll STILL probably do that regardless)

I love Crutches.. the dude is a complete ANIMAL on the field. He might be our best defensive player when healthy. He was made a captain his second year for a reason..
