There was supposed to be a fierce competition at middle linebacker between Colin McCarthy and Moise Fokou.

The way things have played out, Fokou’s going to win the job for the regular season-opener at Pittsburgh without much of a fight. That’s because McCarthy continues to be sidelined with a hamstring injury.

McCarthy has missed the first two preseason games, and coach Mike Munchak said he’s not sure he’ll play at all in the preseason. The Titans, who have two more preseason games, open the regular season on September 8.

“That is still three weeks away, but right now, yes, (Fokou) is our starter unless something changes between now and (then),’’ Munchak said. “I don’t know if Colin will be practicing this week or next week, so it all depends on how that plays out.”

Munchak said Fokou, formerly with the Colts and Eagles, has done a nice job. The time off would make it difficult for McCarthy to step in and play well at Pittsburgh even if he did return at some point in the preseason, Munchak said.

“We think he has played well,’’ Munchak said of Fokou, “but obviously the guy he is competing with hasn’t practiced. He is the best linebacker who has lined up and practiced every day.”

Looks like McCarthy better get his butt in gear and hit the field soon or hes playing himself on the bench for 2013. At one time he was the "lone bright spot" on the team as a rookie and the majority of us all thought he would be the "young stud" LB to build around for the future. His nagging injuries and his slow recovery progress, sadly is beginning to seem like McCarthy will now be an "after thought" bench warmer. Hopefully he can turn this around by mid-season though.

Still not convinced Fokou is starting material. I bet he fades off in the sun when regular season rolls around.

He's our only option. McCarthy can't stay healthy for more than a play.

Yeah, I understand that he is our only option. I'm just not convinced Fokou is starting material though.

At this point, I feel much better with Fokou than I do with the guy named Colin.

Fokou is not starting material. He's a good backup, but we'll definitely be looking at MLB in free agency, and early in the draft next year.

Chances are if a MLB gets cut from a team, he clearly doesn't belong here in Nashville either. The market for MLB is done for the year.
