Hey guys and gals (Amy), Im in the market for a speed boat, not a sail boat, not a fishing boat, something I can tie a tube to and have some fun.

My wifes family just sold their boat a year or so ago, and now miss having a boat, so they've given lucky ol me the task of replacing it, but I dont know much about boats other than they float,.

Any advice would be appreciated. Ive asked people I know for tips, but they all say the same thing. "The best 2 days of owning a boat are the day you buy it, and the day you sell it". Very encouraging I know LOL.

Anyways, who's got the 4-1-1 on boating?

Mastercraft is the go-to brand. You'll pay the name brand price, but they're well worth it.

Are you wanting to just pull younger kids on a tube, or wanting to use it for like wakeboarding?

I was thinking water skiing and stuff like that too, adults and kids will be pulled around with it

    • How many skiing/tubing at a time?
    • How many adults in the boat while someone skiing?
    • How big a boat you want? (Need to know to estimate weight)
    • Where are you taking this boat? Inland lakes and rivers or the ocean? If in the ocean will it be a protected bay or something?
    • Do you have a preference for inboard motors or outboard?

The weight part is major so you need to really calculate and be conscious when shopping. It takes a lot of power to go water skiing and tubing. It would be really frustrating to pile the family into the boat, push the throttle and feel it chug along.

I want it to seat about 8 passengers, its going to be docked at our lake house, and I want an inboard motor. We had a small speed boat before and that worked well for tubing with 3 adults on the tube.

Why does the wight of the boat matter? Isn't HP the key thing to look for?

HP is key but relative to the weight. The more weight the more HP you need. Put a 90 HP motor on a 17 ft boat with one person in it and that sucker will fly. Put that same motor on a 25 ft boat with 8 people and you are not moving too fast.

To make it simple calculate 15 HP for every 100 LBS combined between the weight of all boaters, those skiing, the boat (including motor weight and a full tank of gas). That will give you a decent experience. 10 HP for every 100 lbs if you want to be ballin.
